Speed foods are lower-calorie Free Foods on Slimming World that are encouraged to fill at least one third of your plate at every meal. All speed foods are Free — no syn cost — but they are lower in calories and higher in fibre or water than standard Free Foods, making them more effective for weight loss.
In 2026, Slimming World rebranded syns as Swips. Speed foods were not affected by this change. Speed foods remain the same category they have always been — low-calorie fruits and vegetables that accelerate weight loss by replacing higher-calorie Free Foods on your plate.

Speed foods are a subset of Free Foods with a lower calorie density — typically fruits and vegetables with high water or fibre content. They are marked with an S in the official Slimming World app.
The distinction matters because filling a third of your plate with speed foods rather than standard Free Foods (pasta, rice, potatoes) reduces the overall calorie density of your meal without reducing the volume. A plate that is one third speed vegetables alongside pasta and chicken contains fewer calories than the same plate filled entirely with pasta and chicken.
All speed foods are Free Foods, but not all Free Foods are speed foods. Pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, eggs, and beans are all Free but not speed foods. Speed foods are specifically the lower-calorie fruits and vegetables — strawberries, broccoli, spinach, courgettes, peppers.
The practical difference: swapping the potatoes on your plate for speed vegetables reduces calories while keeping the meal filling. The vegetables occupy the same plate space for a fraction of the calorie count.
Slimming World recommends filling at least one third of your plate with speed foods at each main meal. This is a guideline, not a strict rule — but it is one of the most consistent factors in faster weight loss on the plan.
Members who fill half their plate with speed vegetables typically lose weight faster than those who use the one-third minimum. Speed foods are unlimited, so there is no upper limit on how much you eat.
The table below covers the main speed foods available on the Slimming World plan in 2026. All are Free with no Swips cost.

Starchy vegetables — potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, and sweetcorn — are Free but not speed foods. They are higher in calories per 100g than the speed vegetables above and do not count toward your one-third speed food target.
The easiest approach is to add speed vegetables to meals you already make rather than planning separate speed food dishes.

The fastest habit change is to keep a bag of frozen mixed speed vegetables in the freezer and add a portion to every dinner. This costs zero Swips and reduces the calorie density of the meal without reducing the volume.
Speed foods remain a core part of the Slimming World plan in 2026. The 2026 rebrand changed syns to Swips and introduced the Healthy Extra fats allowance for nuts and avocado, but the speed food category and the one-third plate rule were unchanged.
Check the official Slimming World app for the S marker on any food you are unsure about. The app is updated when the speed food list changes.
