How Many Syns In Alpen Light Bars? & Some Tasty Alternatives!

Are These Crunchy, Chewy Snacks Worth their Syn Value?

Chewy Snacks Worth their Syn Value

The answer to this question is a little bit complicated: Alpen Light Bars are worth different syns depending on the flavour you get. For example, a Chocolate & Fudge bar will set you back 3 syns, a Summer Fruit bar is 4 syns, a Lemon Drizzle is 4.5 syns, and a Double Chocolate is 4 syns.

Although there isn’t a massive amount of variation, those 0.5 syns add up over time and can end up being the difference between you having another snack in your day or not.

Alpen Light Bars have also been a source of some confusion for a lot of people doing Slimming World as due to a change in recipe in 2014, they went from being a Healthy Extra B option to not anymore. But to make matters more confusing still, they’re now back to being Healthy Extra B options!

What is a Healthy Extra B Option?

With many weight loss programmes, there tends to be a focus towards minimising your intake of carbs, which in turn can mean minimising the fibre you consume – cereals and grains are often a high source of fibre but also of carbohydrates, for example.

Healthy Extra B Option

Slimming World understands the importance of fibre in maintaining a healthy digestive system and other bodily processes which is where the idea of a Healthy Extra B (or HexB) comes in.

You’re allowed 1 HexB choice per day which will allow you to gain important minerals and a portion of fibre that you may otherwise be lacking.

Whether it’s a tasty cereal bar or another portion of cereal, it’s vital to get your daily fibre into your diet. If Alpen Bars aren’t your favourite or aren’t available for any reason, here are some alternative foods that you can use as your HexB choice:

  • Kellogg’s Special K Chocolate Delight Bar
  • Aldi Harvest Morn Light Benefit Bar (x2)
  • Weetabix (x2)
  • 45g Dorset Cereals Simply Delicious Muesli
  • 45g Bran Flakes
  • 40g Nestle Honey Nut Shredded Wheat
  • Ryvita Fruit Crunch (x2)
  • Ryvita Multigrain Rye Cakes (x6)
  • 60g Wholemeal Bread
  • Weightwatchers Tortilla Wrap (standard or wholemeal)

Cereals and grains can be scary to many people who are trying to lose weight, but this list is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many healthy carbohydrates available that make ideal HexB options, providing you with essential nutrients.

Switching up your HexB choices from time to time can also help your diet to feel less monotonous as you’ll be able to try lots of different things. This will also give you a better-rounded nutrient-intake.

Why is Fibre Important?

There are so many reasons why fibre is essential for our bodies’ everyday functions as well as out general long-term health. No matter what healthy eating plan you’re following, fibre should be a top consideration.

Here are just a few reasons why:

  • Lowers risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Maintains healthy bowel function, keeping you “regular”
  • Minimises risk of type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer
  • Helps flush cholesterol out of the body
  • Aids the maintenance of healthy gut bacteria
  • Helps to regulate blood sugar levels
Why is Fibre Important

It’s really easy to integrate more fibre into your diet, and with health benefits such as these, there’s no reason not to!

If you’re not a fan of bread and cereals then fruit, seeds, and nuts also have high fibre content as well as a whole range of other vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

Alpen Light or Otherwise

Whether you’re sticking to the Alpen Light bars, having cereal for breakfast, or getting your fibre into your diet another way, there are HexB options to suit all different tastes.

If you feel like eating bread or chocolate-flavoured cereal bars every day seems a bit indulgent, just remember that Slimming World is not about deprivation. You can still eat yummy foods and many of these seemingly decadent foods are actually really good for you!

As long as you cater for everything in your daily syn allowance or allocated Healthy Extras, you’re good to go!
