  1. Any system can become unhealthy if someone obsesses over it. Slimming World reduces cognitive load by reducing dozens of daily decisions into straightforward choices. The plan is not about counting syns, it is about Food Optimising in general: basing meals around lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and low energy density foods. This makes them naturally low calorie, high in fibre, and very filling. To describe the syn system as "calorie counting" runs the risk of missing the point entirely -- syns should only be making up 5-10% of our daily caloric intake and the rest of the plan revolves around intuitive eating.

    A small apple, for example, contains just 10% of the calories of one slice of chocolate cake. You'd need to eat 10 apples to consume the same calories but very few people would eat 10 apples in a single sitting because the fibre would fill you up. However, it is easy to eat several slices of cake in one sitting. This is why Free foods, especially Speed Free foods, are never weighed nor measured. Not because they have no calories, but because they produce natural satiety which makes us stop eating when we're full. Most people can lose weight on the Slimming World diet much more safely than other plans.

    It is important to recognise that SW is not recommended for people with eating disorders. As someone who tried to join SW in a mindset of disordered eating, I was strongly encouraged to get psychological support first before beginning my weight loss journey. It took me several years before I was able to Food Optimise safely, but when I was finally ready it helped overcome the last of my disordered eating ideas. I can't promise it will work for everyone, but I can say from personal experience that it CAN be safe and very positive for people with unhealthy relationships with food, even if that doesn't work every time.
