How Many Syns In Wotsits? & Some Lower Syn Alternative Crisps!

Are Wotsits a Low-Syn Snack?

Some people love sweet snacks, some people prefer savoury, and some people like both! If you belong to either of the latter two groups, you’re probably familiar with a craving only crisps can satisfy.

If you’re on a Slimming World plan and fancy treating yourself to a bag of crisps, it’s important to know how many syns you’ll be using up so you can factor them into your allowance. The last thing you want is to be caught by surprise!

The types and brands of crisps and other savoury snacks on the market are near-endless, so for now we’ll focus on the humble cheesy corn puff, the Wotsit.

How Many Syns Are There in a Bag of Wotsits?

A 22.5g bag of Wotsits will set you back 6 syns whereas a 16.5g bag will be 4.5 syns. When you think about the fact that the usual daily syn allowance for women is 15 and 25 for men, 5 or 6 syns seems like quite a big chunk for just a small packet of crisps.

However, it’s important with any healthy eating plan to still feel normal. Depriving yourself of foods you enjoy can make it harder to stick to the diet overall – moderation is key!

It’s likely that you aren’t going to be losing 6 syns to Wotsits every day so it’s not worth stressing too much. Grab a bag and enjoy!

Do All Wotsit Flavours Use the Same Number of Syns?

Wotsits come in a few different flavours and naturally, there will be a flavour that you’re most likely to gravitate towards. The original flavour is “Cheesy” and a bag of these will take up 5 or 6 syns depending on the size of the packet as mentioned above.

How do the other flavours compare?

Some of the other popular Wotsit flavours include “Really Cheesy”, “Sizzlin’ Steak”, “Prawn Cocktail”, and “Flamin’ Hot”, and luckily, all the flavours contain the same caloric value meaning they’ve all got the same number of syns.

In short, go with whatever flavour takes your fancy without worrying that you could be saving a syn here or there with a different flavour!

What About Similar Types of Crisps?

If you’re thinking about adding some different types of savoury snacks to your usual shopping lists, here’s a list of crisps and how many syns they are which you might find helpful:

  • Tayto Cheese & Onion Crisps – 6.5 syns for a 25g bag
  • Aldi Snackrite Cheese Puffs – 4.5 syns for a 17g bag
  • Asda Great Shape Punchy Paprika Flavour Roast Vegetable Crisps – 5 syns for a 23g bag
  • Doritos Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips – 7.5 syns for a 30g bag
  • Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar – 4.5 syns for a 22g bag
  • Walkers Sunbites Wholegrain Popcorn, Lightly Sea Salted – 4 syns for a 20g bag

There can be quite a bit of variation between different types, brands, flavours, and sizes of crisp so it’s worth looking it up in your Slimming World guide, having a quick Google search, or working out how many syns a snack is depending on its calories.

To Snack or Not to Snack?

Whether you’re a fan of cheese & onion, spicy, salty, roast chicken or any other flavour, don’t completely deprive yourself of the snacks you like. As far as Slimming World is concerned, you’ve been allotted your daily syns for a reason, use them the way you want to!

Wotsits are a relatively low-syn snack that can curb your cravings and actually help you to stay on track by giving yourself a treat. As long as you’ve factored them into your plan for the day and are making generally healthier eating choices, what’s the harm?
