Chinese — syn values guide
By Jenny Updated
Chinese takeaways are probably the trickiest cuisine for Slimming World members to navigate, and the reason is almost always the cooking method rather than the ingredients. Chicken, prawns, vegetables, and even noodles are fundamentally fine — it's the deep-frying, the thick battered coatings, and the generous amounts of oil used in wok cooking that push the syn values up quickly.
That said, a Chinese takeaway is absolutely doable on plan if you know what to look for. The key insight is that there's an enormous difference between the dishes on a Chinese menu. Steamed rice is Free. A simple chicken and vegetable stir-fry in black bean sauce is around 7 syns. A battered sweet and sour in a thick sugary sauce is three times that. The menu is full of contrast, and learning which side of that contrast each dish sits on is the skill.
The other factor worth knowing is that takeaway portions in the UK are typically much larger than the weights used in most syn calculators. If the guide says 7 syns for 200g of chicken in black bean sauce, but your container has 350g in it, you're looking at more like 12 syns. Eat mindfully, stop when you're satisfied, and if you know you're going for a Chinese, bank some syns earlier in the day.
Syn values — Chinese
All values are per portion as served. Sauces and extras add syns unless stated.
| Dish | Portion | Syns |
|---|---|---|
| Steamed white rice Always request this — the only Free base on a Chinese menu | 200g | Free |
| Chicken in black bean sauce | 200g | 7 syns |
| Beef with oyster sauce | 200g | 8 syns |
| Chicken chow mein | 200g | 9 syns |
| Vegetable stir-fry Lowest-syn hot dish on most Chinese menus — order as a side | 200g | 3.5 syns |
| Sweet & sour chicken (battered) Battered coating plus sugary sauce — very high syn, best avoided | 200g | 14 syns |
| Spring rolls | 2 rolls | 9 syns |
| Prawn toast Easy to eat without thinking — decide before they arrive, not after | 2 pieces | 8 syns |
| Wonton soup Good starter choice — filling and keeps you from overeating mains | 300ml bowl | 3 syns |
| Crispy duck with pancakes High syn due to fat in duck skin plus pancakes — an occasional treat | Portion with 3 pancakes | 14 syns |
How to order well at Chinese
Ask for boiled or steamed rice every time — it's Free and there's no reason to order fried rice, which is typically 8–10 syns for the same portion. Most takeaways will accommodate the request without any fuss.
The sauce-on-side trick is one of the most effective ways to reduce syns from a Chinese order. Ask for your sauce served separately, then use less than you would if it arrived already coated. Even halving the sauce can cut 3–4 syns off a dish.
Avoid prawn crackers entirely if you can — they arrive automatically at many takeaways and are easy to mindlessly eat while waiting for the main dishes. A bag of prawn crackers is typically 8–10 syns and provides no real satisfaction.
The best dishes to order are those that are dry-cooked or in sauce rather than battered and fried. Chicken in black bean sauce, beef with oyster sauce, and any stir-fried vegetable dish are your best options. Wonton soup is a surprisingly good choice as a starter — filling, low-syn, and keeps you from overeating the mains.
Portion control is the biggest lever you have. Order one main between two people with extra steamed rice, rather than one main each. Chinese portions are generous and eating half a main plus Free rice is often just as satisfying as eating a full main.
FAQs
What can I order from a Chinese takeaway on Slimming World?
The best choices at a Chinese takeaway on Slimming World are steamed rice (Free), chicken or beef in sauce (black bean, oyster, or similar), stir-fried vegetables, and wonton soup as a starter. Ask for steamed rice instead of fried, request sauce on the side to control how much you use, and avoid battered dishes like sweet and sour chicken and spring rolls, which carry the highest syn values on the menu. What is the lowest syn Chinese takeaway dish?
Steamed white rice is the lowest syn Chinese takeaway option at 0 syns — it's completely Free. Among hot dishes, a vegetable stir-fry is the lowest-syn choice at around 3.5 syns for a 200g portion, because vegetables are Free and the dish uses relatively little oil. Wonton soup is another low-syn option at around 3 syns for a full bowl. If you're planning a Chinese takeaway and want to stay well within your syns, build your meal around steamed rice and stir-fried vegetables with one sauced protein dish.
Can I have fried rice from a Chinese takeaway on Slimming World?
You can, but it will cost you syns. Fried rice is typically 8–10 syns for a standard 200g portion because it's made with oil, egg, and sometimes soy sauce and additional flavourings. Swapping fried for steamed rice is the single biggest syn saving you can make at a Chinese takeaway without changing anything else about your order.
