How Many Syns in Sweet Chilli Sauce?

By Jenny Updated

Sweet chilli sauce is one of those clever little condiments that punches well above its weight on Slimming World. A sticky, glossy blend of red chillies, sugar, vinegar and garlic, it brings a sweet-hot kick to grilled chicken, prawns, spring rolls and stir-fries without demanding a huge syn spend. A standard tablespoon typically lands at around 1 syn, which makes it one of the more forgiving sweet sauces in the cupboard when you compare it to mayonnaise, salad cream or barbecue glazes.

The sugar content is the obvious watch-out. Most supermarket bottles contain between 30g and 50g of sugar per 100g, which is why the syn value climbs sharply if you start drizzling rather than measuring. The good news is that the flavour is so concentrated that a single dessertspoon will happily coat a whole portion of stir-fried vegetables or glaze a tray of chicken thighs under the grill. Used as a finishing sauce rather than a cooking base, it stretches an awfully long way.

On plan, sweet chilli sauce works beautifully as a dipping pot for Speed-heavy salads, rice paper rolls stuffed with prawns and shredded carrot, or chunks of grilled halloumi (remembered as a Healthy Extra A). It also makes a brilliant low-syn marinade when loosened with soy sauce, lime juice and a little garlic puree, none of which add syns. Brush it over salmon fillets before air-frying for a glossy, takeaway-style finish.

It is not a Free Food and it does not count towards a Healthy Extra, so the syns must be counted whether the sauce is poured, dipped or stirred through. Measuring with a proper tablespoon rather than eyeballing the bottle is the single best habit to build. Keep a bottle in the fridge once opened and it will see you through weeks of weeknight dinners without ever feeling like a diet compromise.
