How Many Syns in Stock Cube?

Stock cubes are one of the great unsung heroes of Slimming World cooking, and honestly, I'd be lost without a stash of them in the cupboard. Every classic Knorr, Oxo, Kallo and supermarket own-brand stock cube — chicken, beef, vegetable, lamb, fish, you name it — counts as a Free Food on the plan, which means you can crumble them into curries, casseroles, soups, risottos and Bolognese sauces without spending a single Syn. That's a brilliant thing when you're cooking the SW way, because so much of the plan relies on building bold, savoury flavour without leaning on butter, oil or cream.

The trick with stock cubes on Slimming World is using them properly. A cube dissolved in boiling water makes a perfectly serviceable stock, but the real magic happens when you crumble a dry cube straight into the pan. Sprinkle half a beef cube over speed-veg-packed mince before you add the chopped tomatoes and you'll get a deeper, almost slow-cooked taste in twenty minutes flat. A chicken cube whisked into the water for fluffy rice transforms a side dish into something restaurant-worthy. Vegetable cubes are gold for SW chips — boil potato wedges in heavily seasoned stock water for five minutes before they go in the air fryer.

A quick note on salt: stock cubes are salty little things, so taste before you season further, and look for the reduced-salt versions (Knorr and Kallo both do excellent ones) if you're watching your intake. Jellied stock pots like Knorr Stock Pots are also Free, as are Bovril and Marmite when used as flavourings rather than spread thickly. Liquid stocks in cartons are Free too, so the whole category is a Slimming World cook's playground.
