How Many Syns in Soy Sauce?
By Jenny Updated
Soy sauce is one of those quiet kitchen heroes that Slimming World members can pour with genuine abandon, and it remains a Free Food on the plan regardless of whether you reach for the light or the dark bottle. Made from fermented soya beans, wheat, salt and water, traditional soy sauce delivers an enormous savoury punch — that elusive umami depth — for a tiny calorie cost, which is precisely why it earns its zero-syn status. A typical teaspoon clocks in at around four calories, and even a generous tablespoon barely scrapes twelve, so you can splash it through stir-fries, marinades, noodle bowls and dipping saucers without ever opening the Syns app.
Where soy sauce really earns its keep on plan is in transforming Speed vegetables into something genuinely exciting. A wok full of pak choi, mushrooms, peppers and beansprouts can taste flat when steamed, but a slosh of dark soy with garlic, ginger and a pinch of chilli turns it into a takeaway-style side that fills a third of your Food Optimising plate. Light soy is saltier and thinner, perfect for finishing dressings and dipping sushi; dark soy is thicker, sweeter and richer, ideal for slow-braised dishes, marinades for chicken thighs, or glossing a tray of roasted aubergine.
The one watch-out is sodium. A tablespoon can carry close to a gram of salt, which is roughly a sixth of the recommended daily intake, so members managing blood pressure should reach for reduced-salt versions — these are still Free and taste nearly identical in cooked dishes. Tamari, the wheat-free Japanese cousin, is also zero syns and a brilliant gluten-free swap. Keep the bottle in the fridge once opened, use it boldly in fakeaways, and let it do the heavy lifting your Syns budget shouldn't have to.
