How Many Syns in Smoothie?
By Jenny Updated
Smoothies sit in an awkward spot on Slimming World. They feel virtuous because they are built from fruit, but the blender does a job your teeth and stomach would otherwise do, releasing the natural sugars in a concentrated, easy-to-drink form. That is why fruit eaten whole stays Free, while the same fruit whizzed into a drink must be synned. A single 250ml shop-bought smoothie can easily contain four or five pieces of fruit, and the syns climb accordingly.
Values vary widely by brand and fruit content, so always check the label rather than guess. A small 150ml carton from a supermarket sits around 3 syns, while a 250ml bottle is usually 5 syns or more, and large fast-food smoothies built with yoghurt, honey or juice can creep into double figures. Anything containing added sugar, syrups or ice cream pushes higher again. As a general rule, syn all smoothies, including the ones you make at home with whole fruit and a splash of milk or yoghurt, because once fruit is blended it no longer counts as Free.
The smarter swap, if you fancy something cold and fruity, is a bowl of chopped fruit with fat-free natural yoghurt, or a fruit salad eaten with a spoon. You get the same vitamins, far more fibre intact, and zero syns. If you genuinely prefer a smoothie, blend it yourself so you control the portion: half a banana, a handful of berries, a splash of skimmed milk and ice will usually land around 3 to 4 syns and feel far more filling than a 250ml shop carton drunk in two minutes flat. Treat smoothies as a small indulgence rather than a health drink, weigh up whether the syns are worth it that day, and the rest of your plan keeps working hard.
