How Many Syns in Coffee?

Coffee is one of those rare pleasures that fits beautifully into Slimming World, provided you know where the hidden syns are lurking. A plain black coffee, whether instant, filter, cafetiere or espresso, is essentially free. The drink itself contains only a couple of calories per cup, so you can sip as many as you like throughout the day without touching your daily syns allowance. Many members find that switching to black coffee, perhaps with a dash of sweetener, is one of the simplest swaps they can make on plan.
The complications begin the moment milk, sugar or syrups enter the cup. A splash of semi-skimmed milk in a mug-sized coffee will set you back around half a syn, while a latte or cappuccino made with semi-skimmed quickly climbs into the 2-3 syn region depending on size. If you take your coffee with a teaspoon of sugar, that is roughly one extra syn per cup, and two sugars doubles it. Flavoured syrups, whipped cream toppings and shop-bought iced coffees can push a single drink past 8 syns before you have even sat down.
The smartest approach on Slimming World is to use your Healthy Extra A milk allowance to cover your daily coffees. A 350ml measure of skimmed milk stretches surprisingly far across three or four small lattes, especially if you make them at home. Sweeteners such as Canderel, Splenda or stevia drops add zero syns, and unsweetened almond milk is another low-syn alternative if dairy is not your friend. Decaf counts identically to caffeinated, so an evening cup need not derail anything. Treat coffee shop visits as planned indulgences, check the syn values in advance using the Slimming World app, and you can enjoy your daily brew without compromise.
