How Many Syns in Fish Cakes?

By Jenny Updated

Fish cakes are one of those nostalgic British teatime staples that feel comforting and quick, but they can be a surprisingly tricky proposition on Slimming World. The issue is rarely the fish itself — white fish like cod, haddock and pollock are Free Foods, and even oilier options like salmon are nutritionally generous despite carrying a small syn value for the oil content. The trouble lies in everything wrapped around the fish: breadcrumb coatings, batter, added butter, cream, mayonnaise binders and the sunflower oil that shop-bought versions are typically fried in before freezing. A single standard frozen fish cake from the supermarket freezer aisle will usually clock in around 6 to 8 syns, and the chunkier premium versions from M&S, Waitrose or Young's can climb past 9 syns each — eat two with chips and you have demolished a daily allowance before you have even sat down.

The good news is that fish cakes are wildly easy to make at home in a way that fits the plan beautifully. Flake cooked white fish through fluffy mashed potato seasoned with spring onion, lemon zest, parsley, dill and a generous grind of black pepper, shape into patties, then bake on a tray lined with baking paper after a quick spritz of low-calorie cooking spray. Skip the breadcrumb coating entirely, or use a thin dusting of dried herbs and paprika for crunch and colour. Made this way, the whole fish cake stays close to Free, with only a small syn cost if you add a binding egg yolk or a scrape of mayonnaise.

Serve with a mountain of Speed vegetables — peas, samphire, wilted spinach, a heap of garden salad or roasted cherry tomatoes — and a wedge of lemon. You get the nostalgia, the crisp edges and the soft savoury middle without the breadcrumb syn tax.
