How Many Syns in Streaky Bacon?

By Jenny Updated

Streaky bacon is one of Britain's most beloved breakfast staples, recognised for its distinctive layers of fat running through the meat — the very feature that gives it its name. Cut from the pork belly, streaky rashers carry a richer, more indulgent flavour than their leaner counterpart, back bacon, and that extra fat content is precisely why the two cuts are treated very differently on the Slimming World plan.

On Slimming World, back bacon trimmed of all visible fat and grilled is a Free Food, meaning you can enjoy it without counting Syns. Streaky bacon, however, is a different story. Because of its significantly higher fat content — even before any additional cooking fat is added — streaky rashers must be Synned. The good news is that the Syn values are fairly modest: a couple of rashers work out at around 2 Syns, making streaky bacon an occasional treat rather than a daily staple.

The key to keeping Syns as low as possible is in the preparation. Always grill streaky bacon rather than frying it, and allow the excess fat to drip away during cooking. Avoid adding butter or oil, and pat the cooked rashers with kitchen paper to absorb any remaining surface fat before weighing your portion. These small steps ensure you are getting the most accurate Syn value.

Streaky bacon works wonderfully across a range of dishes. Wrapped around lean chicken breast before roasting, a single rasher adds tremendous smoky flavour for just 1 Syn. Crumbled over a Free Food salad, it lends a satisfying crunch. Even a classic BLT can be reimagined as a lower-Syn treat by using back bacon for the bulk and one or two streaky rashers purely for flavour.

When shopping, compare packaging carefully. Smoked and unsmoked streaky bacon carry similar Syn values, but speciality or marinated varieties may contain added sugars or coatings that push Syns higher. Always check the label and calculate using the official Slimming World resources if in doubt.
