How Many Syns in Pastrami?
By Jenny Updated
Pastrami is one of those deli meats that feels indulgent but actually slots very comfortably into a Slimming World day, which is exactly why it has quietly become a staple in my fridge. Originally a Romanian preservation technique brought to New York by Jewish immigrants in the late nineteenth century, traditional pastrami starts with beef navel or brisket that is brined, rubbed generously with black pepper, coriander seed and garlic, then smoked low and slow before being steamed until tender.
The result is a deep red, peppery, melt-in-the-mouth slice that delivers a huge amount of flavour for very little fat, because most of the visible fat is trimmed before curing and rendered away during the long cook. On the plan, a typical 30g portion of supermarket sliced pastrami comes in at around 1 syn, making it a far smarter swap than salami, chorizo or pepperoni, all of which carry significantly more fat per slice and can easily push 5 to 7 syns for the same weight.
Pastrami also stretches beautifully across meals: pile it into a SW-friendly Reuben using wholemeal bread as your Healthy Extra B, layer it through a salad bowl with gherkins, mustard and lots of speed leaves, or wrap it around asparagus spears for a quick lunchbox filler. Because the cure delivers so much punch on its own, you rarely need to add oil, butter or rich dressings, which keeps the overall meal lean.
Do keep an eye on the salt content though, as cured meats are inherently high in sodium, so balance pastrami days with plenty of water, fresh vegetables and potassium-rich fruit. Treated sensibly, it is one of the most satisfying low-syn meats you can keep to hand.
