How Many Syns in Cranberry Sauce?
By Jenny Updated
Cranberry sauce is the glossy, ruby-red condiment that turns a humble roast dinner into something properly festive, and it has earned a permanent spot on the Slimming World shelf for good reason. The tartness of the berries gives it a sharp, palate-waking kick that cuts beautifully through rich meats like turkey, gammon, pork and even a wedge of brie, which means you genuinely do not need very much of it to feel as though you have treated yourself.
Most shop-bought jars sit somewhere between 1.5 and 2 syns per tablespoon, which is a small price to pay for the lift it gives an otherwise lean plate of food. The reason cranberry sauce carries any syn value at all is the sheer volume of added sugar required to balance the natural sourness of the fruit.
Cranberries themselves are wonderfully low in calories and packed with vitamin C, but on their own they are almost unbearably sharp, so manufacturers stir in caster sugar, glucose syrup or apple juice concentrate to make the sauce spoonable and sweet. On plan, the trick is to treat it as a finishing flourish rather than a side dish in its own right.
A neat teaspoon dotted around the edge of a Sunday roast plate, a thin smear inside a cold turkey sandwich, or a small dollop swirled through fat-free natural yoghurt as a dessert topping all deliver maximum flavour for minimum syns. If you fancy a free version, you can simmer fresh or frozen cranberries with orange zest, a cinnamon stick and a generous splash of sweetener until they pop and collapse into a thick compote, which is properly delicious and costs nothing from your daily allowance.
Keep portions honest and weighed where possible, because spoon sizes drift dramatically once the jar comes out at the table.
