How Many Syns in Lemon Sorbet?

By Jenny Updated

Lemon sorbet sits in a curious spot on Slimming World: it is plainly a dessert, plainly sugary, and yet it tends to come in at lower syn values than most of its freezer-aisle neighbours. The reason is straightforward — sorbet is essentially fruit purée, sugar and water, with no cream, no eggs and no added fat. Calories, and therefore syns, come almost entirely from sugar rather than the dense fat-and-sugar combination you get in a tub of vanilla ice cream. A typical scoop lands around 4 syns, which is roughly half what you would spend on the equivalent scoop of dairy ice cream, and a fraction of what a slab of cheesecake or a chocolate brownie would cost you.

That does not make it free, and it does not make it a Healthy Extra, but it does make it a genuinely useful dessert when you want something cold, sharp and pudding-shaped without blowing the day. Lemon in particular works well because the acidity reads as 'fresh' rather than 'sweet', so a small portion feels satisfying — pair a single scoop with a pile of Speed raspberries or blueberries and you have a dessert that looks generous on the plate while only costing four syns.

The catch is variability. Supermarket own-brand lemon sorbets cluster around 4 syns per 80g scoop, but the posher tubs and the Italian-style sorbettos can push closer to 5 or even 6 syns for the same weight, because they use more sugar and less water. Always check the back of the tub against the current Syns Online database rather than assuming, and weigh your scoop the first time — the standard ice cream scoop most of us reach for delivers nearer 100g than 80g, which quietly bumps a 4-syn pudding into 5-syn territory before you have even sat down.
