How Many Syns in Raisins?

By Jenny Updated

Raisins are one of the most common Slimming World traps for new members. Fresh fruit is free on Slimming World — that is a well-known rule — and so people reasonably assume that dried fruit, being fruit, must also be free. It is not. Raisins are approximately 4 syns per 28–30g, sultanas are the same, and dried cranberries sit even higher. All dried fruit carries syns on Slimming World, without exception, because the drying process removes the water content and concentrates the natural sugars dramatically.

The comparison is stark. Fresh grapes are completely free. The same grapes, dried into raisins, are 4 syns for a small 28g handful. The weight is similar, the flavour is recognisably related, but the calorie density is enormously different once the water has been removed. That concentrated sugar is exactly what the Slimming World syn calculation picks up on.

A 30g serving of raisins contains approximately 18g of sugar — that is more than half the daily recommended amount in a portion that does not look like much at all. The community consistently flags raisins as a food where a casual handful at the kitchen counter can cost you 4 or 5 syns without you registering it as an indulgence at all.

Dried fruit can absolutely still feature in your diet on plan. It is worth its syn cost in the right place — a tablespoon of raisins stirred into overnight oats brings real sweetness and flavour for 2 syns that no sweetener can replicate. The key is tracking them like any other synned food rather than treating them as a syn-free snack option because they come from the fruit aisle.

Sultanas, currants, and mixed dried fruit are all the same syn value as raisins per gram. Dates are slightly higher at around 5 syns for 30g. Dried apricots are somewhat lower at 2.5 syns per 28g.

Fresh grapes

FREE vs 4 syns per 28g of raisins

Fresh grapes are completely free on Slimming World and are the most direct fresh-for-dried swap. The natural sweetness is similar, the flavour is recognisably the same, and a generous portion of grapes satisfies the same craving that a handful of raisins does — at zero syn cost. Frozen grapes are also free and have a satisfying chewiness that works particularly well as a snack.

Fresh or frozen berries

FREE

All fresh berries — blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries — are free and most are also Speed foods. Stirred into porridge or overnight oats where you might otherwise use raisins, they add sweetness and moisture at zero syns. Frozen berries are just as good and usually cheaper, making them a very practical everyday swap.

Medjool dates (measured)

5 syns per 30g — similar or slightly higher

If you specifically want a chewy, caramel-sweet dried fruit flavour in baking or energy balls, Medjool dates deliver it at a similar syn cost to raisins. They are not a lower-syn option but they are considerably more flavoursome per piece, so you typically need fewer of them to achieve the same effect in a recipe.

What Slimming World members say

The raisins question is one of the most consistent community gotchas — members assume fruit is free, see "dried fruit" and add it without counting. The community answer is universal and unambiguous.

"Raisins aren't free anyway — they are synned, as is all dried fruit"

via MiniMins.com — Raisins, how many syns?

"A 30g serving has about 18g of sugar which is over half your recommended daily amount"

Community member explanation via MiniMins.com — Dried fruit values thread

The community tip that comes up repeatedly: swap raisins in porridge for fresh berries. All fresh berries are free and most are Speed foods — a direct upgrade that saves the syns entirely.

FAQs

Are raisins free on Slimming World?

No, raisins are not free on Slimming World. Despite fresh fruit being a free food on the plan, all dried fruit carries syns because the drying process removes water and concentrates the natural sugars. Raisins are approximately 4 syns per 28–30g. This applies to all dried fruit: sultanas (4 syns per 28g), dried cranberries (5 syns per 28g), dried apricots (2.5 syns per 28g), and dates (5 syns per 30g) all need to be counted. The rule is simple: fresh fruit is free, dried and cooked fruit is synned. If you want the flavour of grapes without the syns, fresh grapes are completely free.

How many syns are raisins on Slimming World?

A 28–30g handful of raisins is 4 syns on Slimming World. A 14g mini snack box is 2 syns. A 50g portion is approximately 7 syns. Sultanas are the same syn value as raisins per gram — both are around 4 syns per 28g. These values apply to all standard raisin varieties: flame raisins, seedless raisins, and most supermarket own-brand raisins are all comparable. Always weigh your portion rather than estimating by eye, because a casual handful poured from the bag often turns out to be considerably more than 28g.

Can I use raisins in Slimming World baking?

Yes, you can use raisins in baking — you just need to syn them accurately and divide the total across the number of portions in your recipe. At 4 syns per 28g, a recipe using 56g of raisins contains 8 syns from the raisins alone. Divided across 12 pieces of baking, that is less than 1 syn each from the raisins. The total syn value per portion will also include any butter, sugar, and other synned ingredients in the recipe. For everyday baking on Slimming World, keeping the raisin quantity modest and using sweetener instead of sugar elsewhere in the recipe keeps the per-portion syn count manageable.

Why are raisins synned if fresh grapes are free?

The drying process removes virtually all the water from grapes, which dramatically increases the calorie density per gram compared to fresh grapes. Fresh grapes are approximately 67 calories per 100g. Raisins are approximately 296 calories per 100g — more than four times as calorie-dense. Slimming World syn values reflect calorie density, so the same weight of raisins as fresh grapes carries nearly four times the syn cost. The natural sugars in grapes, which the water in fresh fruit dilutes, become highly concentrated in raisins. This is why fresh fruit is free (high water and fibre content keeps calories low per gram) while dried fruit always carries syns (the water is gone and sugar is concentrated).

Are sultanas the same syns as raisins on Slimming World?

Yes, sultanas and raisins are essentially the same syn value on Slimming World — both are approximately 4 syns per 28g. Sultanas are made from seedless green grapes and are typically slightly softer and sweeter than regular raisins, but their nutritional profile is similar enough that the syn values round to the same figure. Currants are also the same syn value per gram. If a recipe calls for sultanas and you have raisins, or vice versa, you can substitute freely without any change to the syn calculation.
