How Many Syns in Medjool Dates?

By Jenny Updated

Medjool dates are the caramel-soft, toffee-sweet jewels of the date world, and they have a complicated relationship with Slimming World. On paper they are fruit, which usually means Free, but in practice their sugar concentration is so high that the plan treats them like a sweet ingredient and assigns Syn values. Roughly two-thirds of a Medjool date by weight is natural sugar, which is why a single fruit lands at around 67 calories and 2 Syns. Compare that to an apple or a handful of berries, which you can pile onto your plate without counting, and you can see why dates need a more measured approach.

That does not mean they are off-limits, though. Used cleverly, Medjool dates can be one of the most useful ingredients in a SW-friendly kitchen. Blitzed into a paste with a splash of boiling water, they replace sugar in flapjacks, energy balls and overnight oats. Chopped finely and stirred through a Mullerlight, they turn a basic snack into something that feels indulgent. Stuffed with a teaspoon of light soft cheese or a smear of peanut butter (counted), they become the kind of pudding you would happily serve to guests.

The trick is to weigh them rather than eyeball them, because Medjool dates vary wildly in size, from petite supermarket ones at around 18g to enormous Jordan River fruits closer to 30g. Always count the stones in and the stones out, then check your weight on the scales. Two dates can easily creep up to 4 or 5 Syns if they are particularly plump, which is fine if you have planned for them but a nasty surprise if you have not. Treat them as a flavour bomb, not a free snack, and they earn their place beautifully.
