How Many Syns in Crumpets?

By Jenny Updated

Crumpets occupy a complicated space on Slimming World, and the question I see come up most often is whether they can count as a Healthy Extra B. The straightforward answer: standard supermarket crumpets do not qualify as a Healthy Extra on the plan. They need to be counted as syns. A standard crumpet (around 55–60g) costs approximately 3.5 to 4.5 syns, which puts it at the higher end for a single piece of bread but not completely out of reach for most members' daily syn allowances.

The syn count varies more between brands than you might expect. Warburtons crumpets are among the most popular and sit around 3.5 to 4 syns each depending on the exact size and variety. Own-brand supermarket crumpets from Tesco, Sainsbury's and ASDA tend to be similar. Thins, mini crumpets, and lighter versions come in at 2 to 3 syns and are worth looking for if you eat crumpets regularly and want to keep the syn cost manageable.

What catches people out is the toppings. A crumpet with a scrape of full-fat butter is 3.5 syns for the crumpet plus 3 syns for the butter — that is nearly 7 syns before you have added anything else. Swapping to Flora Light or Marmite dramatically changes the picture. Marmite on a crumpet is one of the most satisfying syn-efficient breakfasts I know of, and Marmite is completely free.

If you enjoy crumpets as a regular part of your plan, the key is to account for them at the start of the day rather than adding them up at the end. A 4-syn crumpet with Marmite and a bowl of Speed fruit alongside is a filling, quick, and very enjoyable breakfast that sits well within any daily syn allowance.

Lower-syn alternatives

Swaps that keep the feel of the original without the syn hit.

Ryvita (HExB)

FREE as Healthy Extra B at 2 crispbreads

Two Ryvita dark rye crispbreads qualify as your Healthy Extra B, meaning they are completely free within your daily allowances. They are thinner and crunchier than a crumpet but take toppings like Marmite, fat-free cottage cheese, and smoked salmon very well. The syn saving compared to two standard crumpets is around 8 syns.

Wholemeal bread (HExB)

FREE as Healthy Extra B at 2 slices

Two slices of a qualifying wholemeal or brown bread count as your Healthy Extra B. A toast-based breakfast with free toppings (Marmite, eggs, grilled tomatoes) is filling, flexible, and costs nothing in syns when you use your HExB. It is the closest practical substitute for a crumpet breakfast.

Warburtons Thin Crumpets

2.5 syns vs 3.5 syns for standard

Warburtons Thin Crumpets are the easiest same-brand syn reduction if you want to keep having crumpets but bring the cost down. At around 2.5 syns each, a single thin crumpet with Marmite is a very manageable 2.5-syn breakfast component. They are widely available in most major supermarkets.

What Slimming World members say

Crumpets cause consistent confusion because they look and feel like bread — and bread can be a Healthy Extra B. The community is clear: crumpets are not on the HExB list and must be synned.

"Crumpets were a free food on WW No Count but have never been free on SW"

via Mumsnet — Slimming World questions thread

"They're primarily flour, which is always synned, and don't have enough fibre to be a HEB choice. You have to syn them one syn for every 20 calories"

via MiniMins.com — Crumpets, why so many syns?

Community tip: Warburtons Crumpet Thins (3 syns) and Kingsmill Crumpet Thins (2.5 syns) are widely recommended as the lower-syn swap. Several members on TikTok pair them with Chocshot (1 syn) for a 3.5-syn chocolate-flavoured crumpet treat.

FAQs

Are crumpets a Healthy Extra on Slimming World?

Standard crumpets do not qualify as a Healthy Extra B on Slimming World. To qualify as a Healthy Extra B, a bread or cereal product needs to be on the official Slimming World HExB list, and the popular crumpet brands such as Warburtons and own-label supermarket crumpets are not on that list. This means crumpets need to be counted as syns — around 3.5 to 4 syns for a standard crumpet depending on the brand. If you want bread-style food as your HExB, qualifying options include two slices of certain wholemeal and brown loaves, wholemeal pitta, Ryvita crispbreads, and original Weetabix.

How many syns is a Warburtons crumpet?

A standard Warburtons original crumpet (55g) is approximately 3.5 syns on Slimming World. Warburtons Thin Crumpets are smaller at around 35g and cost approximately 2.5 syns each, making them the lower-syn option within the Warburtons range. If you are a daily crumpet eater and want to reduce your syn spend, switching to Warburtons Thin Crumpets saves around 1 syn per crumpet, which adds up to 7 syns per week. Always check the specific pack you are buying, as portion sizes can vary slightly between batches and the syn value scales with weight.

What are the best low-syn toppings for crumpets on Slimming World?

Marmite is the single best crumpet topping on Slimming World because it is completely free, and the strong savoury flavour means a small amount is all you need. Vegemite is the same — completely free. Fat-free soft cheese (plain or with herbs) is also free and gives a creamy, neutral base that works well with smoked salmon or cherry tomatoes. Reduced-sugar jam is around 0.5 syns per teaspoon. The toppings to watch are butter and spreads — even Flora Light adds 1 syn per 7g. A crumpet loaded with full-fat butter and jam can easily add another 5 to 6 syns on top of the crumpet itself.

Can I have two crumpets on Slimming World?

Yes, two crumpets is absolutely possible on Slimming World — it will just cost you around 7 to 8 syns for two standard crumpets, which is more than half of a conservative 15-syn daily allowance from bread alone. Whether that works for you depends on what else you want to spend syns on that day. Many members find one crumpet with free toppings and a piece of fruit alongside is more satisfying than two crumpets, because the fruit adds volume and Speed food benefits. If two crumpets is your thing, using Warburtons Thin Crumpets brings the total down to around 5 syns, which is more workable.

Are crumpets lower syn than bread on Slimming World?

It depends on the bread. Two slices of a qualifying wholemeal loaf used as your Healthy Extra B costs you nothing in syns at all, making bread the dramatically lower-syn option if you choose the right loaf. If you are comparing crumpets to non-HExB bread outside your allowances, the syn values are broadly similar per gram of product. A standard crumpet at 4 syns is comparable to two slices of white bread. What gives qualifying bread the advantage is the Healthy Extra system — using your HExB on bread effectively frees up all your syns for other things, whereas crumpets always need to be counted.
