How Many Syns in Plain Flour?

By Jenny Updated

Plain flour is one of those everyday store-cupboard staples that quietly slips into countless recipes, from white sauces to Yorkshire puddings, dusted pastry boards to crispy chicken coatings. On Slimming World, it sits firmly in the syns column rather than the Free Food list, which catches a lot of new members off guard. Wheat flour is energy-dense and refined, so even modest amounts add up quickly when you're tipping it straight from the bag into a mixing bowl without a thought.

The broad rule of thumb is to syn every gram of plain flour you use in baking, batters, roux, and coatings, then divide the total syns across the portions the recipe yields. A simple white sauce made with a tablespoon of flour to thicken a family lasagne adds roughly two and a half syns to the whole dish, which works out at well under a syn per serving once split four ways. That kind of arithmetic is well worth doing rather than abandoning home cooking altogether.

Where plain flour can become a real syn drain is in pancakes, dumplings, scones, and breaded coatings, because the flour is the backbone of the recipe rather than a small thickener. For coatings on chicken or fish, many members swap to seasoned passata, beaten egg with paprika, or crushed Free cereals like cornflakes to keep things syn-light and still satisfyingly crunchy. For thickening sauces, cornflour mixed with cold water tends to use less product per spoonful, though it carries a similar syn value gram for gram.

Keep a small set of digital scales near your flour tin and weigh out exactly what the recipe calls for. Guessing by eye almost always overshoots, and an extra tablespoon here or there can quietly tip a sensible bake into something that throws your day off course.
