How Many Syns in Bread Roll?

By Jenny Updated

A bread roll is one of those staple items that crops up constantly on Slimming World, whether you're packing a lunchbox, building a burger night, or rounding off a bowl of soup with something to dunk. Unlike sliced bread from a wrapped loaf, an individual roll isn't covered by the Healthy Extra B allowance, which catches a lot of members out in their first few weeks on plan. The HExB list specifies wholemeal bread by the slice with a strict weight per portion, and whole rolls — even seeded wholemeal ones — sit outside that allowance and must be synned in full instead.

A standard white bakery roll of around 57g typically lands at roughly 7 syns, while a wholemeal version of the same size comes in slightly lower at about 6 syns because of the marginally different calorie density. Brioche rolls, milk rolls, and anything enriched with butter or sugar climb higher again, often pushing 8 or 9 syns for a single bun. Bagels and ciabatta rolls are heavier still and can easily account for half your daily syn allowance in one go.

That doesn't mean rolls are off the menu — far from it. They work brilliantly around a Speed-heavy meal where the rest of the plate is free, like a generous bowl of homemade vegetable soup, a chunky chilli, or a Saturday-night burger built with extra-lean mince and piles of salad. The trick is matching the roll to the meal so the syns feel worth it. Petits pains and finger rolls tend to be smaller (around 35-40g) and can come in at 4-5 syns, which is often a more flexible choice if you want bread alongside other treats in the day. Always weigh the roll fresh from the bakery rather than trusting bag estimates.
