How Many Syns in Nuts?

By Jenny Updated

Nuts are one of those foods that trip up a lot of people on Slimming World, myself included when I first started. They look so innocent — a little handful here, a few cashews scattered on your stir-fry there — but they are calorie-dense and carry a decent chunk of Syns even in small quantities.

The thing is, I don't think nuts are 'bad' food at all. They are packed with healthy fats, protein, and genuinely useful nutrients.

The plan simply asks us to count them honestly, which is fair enough when 28g can set you back 5 or 6 Syns. What I've learned over time is that nuts are absolutely worth including in your week, but they work best when you're intentional about them — a measured snack with a purpose, not a mindless handful from the bag whilst making dinner.

I've been caught out by that more than once and silently wondered why the scales weren't moving. Below I've broken down the most common nuts by Syns per 28g, which is roughly a small handful, plus popular branded products and a few lower-Syn alternatives for when you're after that satisfying crunch without spending too many Syns.

Lower-syn alternatives

Swaps that keep the feel of the original without the syn hit.

Edamame (boiled, lightly salted) 100g

2.5 Syns

Genuinely satisfying as a snack — you get a much larger volume of food, solid protein and fibre, and roughly half the Syns of most nuts for a more generous serving.

Skinny popcorn (plain or lightly salted) 20g

3 Syns

When you want something light and crunchy rather than dense and rich, low-calorie popcorn delivers that satisfying snack feeling with fewer Syns and considerably more volume.

Roasted chickpeas 30g

3 Syns

Higher in fibre and protein than nuts, with a brilliant savoury crunch that satisfies the same craving. You get more food for a similar Syn spend and the fibre keeps you fuller longer.

FAQs

Are nuts Free on Slimming World?

No, nuts are not Free on Slimming World — they are Synned foods across the plan. Despite being nutritious and rich in healthy fats and protein, their fat content means they carry Syns whether you're on Extra Easy, SP, or any other version. Even plain, unsalted nuts from the supermarket count. This catches a lot of people out because nuts feel like a 'healthy' snack, but on Slimming World the principle is consistent: foods with a significant fat content are Synned, and nuts are calorie-dense even in portions that look deceptively small on a plate.

Which nut has the lowest Syns on Slimming World?

Pistachios (shelled) come in at around 4 Syns per 28g, making them the lowest-Syn nut you'll commonly find in the supermarket. Peanuts are close behind at approximately 4.5 Syns per 28g. At the other end of the scale, macadamia nuts are the highest at around 7 Syns per 28g, so they're best saved for occasions when you really want them rather than daily snacking. If you're trying to get the most satisfaction from your Syn allowance, pistachios and peanuts give you the best return — and the shelling process with pistachios naturally paces your eating, which is a genuine bonus.

How many Syns is a handful of nuts?

A small handful of nuts — roughly 28g, or around 20 to 25 nuts depending on the variety — will typically cost you between 4 and 7 Syns on Slimming World. Pistachios sit at the lower end at around 4 Syns, while macadamia nuts can hit 7 Syns for the same weight. The challenge with nuts is that it's very easy to eat more than you realise — a 'small handful' can quickly become 50g or more if you're eating straight from the bag, which would double or triple your Syn count in seconds. I weigh mine out every single time, without exception, because the difference between 28g and 50g is enormous on plan.

Are peanuts Free on Slimming World?

No, peanuts are not Free on Slimming World, even though they are technically a legume rather than a tree nut. Plain peanuts cost approximately 4.5 Syns per 28g serving. Salted, roasted, or honey-roasted varieties may have slightly different values depending on added ingredients, so it's worth checking the specific product rather than assuming they're all the same. Peanut butter is also Synned — typically around 3 Syns per level tablespoon for reduced-fat varieties and more for standard peanut butter. If you want a Syn-free protein-rich snack with a similar satisfaction level, edamame is the closest effective swap.

Can I eat nuts every day on Slimming World?

You can absolutely include nuts in your daily Syn allowance if you enjoy them — there is nothing off-limits on Slimming World as long as you count honestly and stay within your Syn range. Most people on plan work with 5 to 15 Syns per day, and a small measured portion of nuts fits within that. The key is being intentional about it: weigh your portion before you eat, never snack from the bag, and treat nuts as a considered choice rather than an unconscious habit. If your weight loss has stalled unexpectedly, nuts can sometimes be a hidden culprit because they're so easy to eat more of than you intended — even when you think you're being careful.
