How Many Syns in Honey?

By Jenny Updated

Honey is one of those ingredients I genuinely struggled to let go of when I first started Slimming World. I was drizzling it on everything — porridge, yoghurt, toast, even stirring it into my tea — without giving it a second thought.

Then I actually looked it up and had a bit of a rethink! The good news is honey isn't banned, it's just not free, so you can absolutely still use it as long as you're counting those syns.

A teaspoon (about 7g) comes in at 1 syn, which honestly isn't too bad when you're using it as a proper flavour hit. A tablespoon works out at around 3 syns and 25g is roughly 3.5 syns.

The type of honey doesn't make a huge difference to the syn count either — manuka, set, runny, acacia — they're all roughly the same. Where people tend to go wrong is using a generous pour and not measuring it.

Get yourself a set of measuring spoons and you'll be absolutely fine. I now keep a small jar of clear runny honey in the cupboard and use it sparingly where it really earns its place.

Lower-syn alternatives

Swaps that keep the feel of the original without the syn hit.

Sweetener

0 syns

A granulated sweetener like Canderel or Splenda gives you the sweetness without any syns at all — brilliant for stirring into tea, porridge, or baking where the honey flavour isn't essential.

Agave Nectar

Similar syns

Agave has a slightly lower glycaemic index than honey, but the syn count is broadly the same, so it's more of a personal preference swap than a syn-saving one. Worth considering if you prefer a more neutral, lighter flavour.

Date Syrup

3.5 syns per tbsp

Date syrup is less refined and has a richer, more caramel-like flavour. The syns are similar to honey but you get a deeper taste, so a little goes further in baking and dressings.

What Slimming World members say

Honey syn values are one of the most consistently discussed topics across Slimming World forums — the community answer has stayed the same for years and is unambiguous: all honey is synned, no exceptions.

"1 tbsp honey (2.5 syns)" — used in a sticky chicken marinade in a what-I-eat post

via MiniMins.com — How many syns in a tbsp of honey?

"Some members ask whether 'natural' or 'raw' honey is different — the community answer is no, all honey types count the same. Manuka honey: same formula applies (1 syn per tsp), despite its health halo."

Community consensus via Just a Average Jen — Frequently asked syns

The practical tip that surfaces most often: a proper measuring teaspoon of honey is smaller than most people's intuitive pour. Members consistently recommend measuring once so you know what 7g actually looks like in your specific spoon, because a generous squeeze can easily be 2–3 tablespoons rather than one.

FAQs

Is honey free on Slimming World?

No, honey is not a free food on Slimming World and it doesn't count as a Healthy Extra either. Every variety — clear, set, manuka, acacia, organic — needs to be synned. A teaspoon (7g) is 1 syn and a tablespoon (21g) is around 3 syns. The good news is that because honey has such a strong flavour, a small amount goes a long way, so you don't need much to get the taste you're after.

How many syns is a teaspoon of honey?

A level teaspoon of honey, which is roughly 7g, is 1 syn on Slimming World. That's actually quite manageable if you're just adding a little drizzle to your porridge or yoghurt. The key is using a proper measuring teaspoon rather than a heaped dessert spoon from the drawer — most of us overestimate what a teaspoon looks like until we actually measure it out properly.

Is manuka honey lower syn than regular honey?

No, manuka honey is not lower in syns than regular clear or set honey. The syn values across all honey types are essentially the same because Slimming World syns are calculated from the calorie and fat content, and all honeys are nutritionally very similar. Whether you're buying a premium manuka jar or the budget supermarket variety, a teaspoon is still 1 syn. The antibacterial properties of manuka are a separate matter entirely — they don't affect the syn count at all.

Can I use honey in baking on Slimming World?

Yes, you can absolutely use honey in baking — you just need to syn it and divide the total syns between the number of portions in your recipe. If a cake recipe uses 3 tablespoons of honey (9 syns total) and makes 12 slices, that's less than 1 syn per slice from the honey alone. It's worth doing the maths before you start so you know exactly what you're working with. Honey adds a lovely depth of flavour to flapjacks, marinades, and salad dressings, so it's well worth the syns in the right recipe.

What about honey in tea?

Honey in tea needs to be synned just like any other use. A teaspoon (1 syn) is fine if you enjoy it and you're budgeting for it. That said, if you're having several cups a day it can add up quite quickly — two or three teaspoons across the day is already 2 to 3 syns before you've eaten anything. A zero-calorie sweetener is the easiest swap if you just want a touch of sweetness without touching your syn allowance. Totally your call though — if honey in your morning tea brings you genuine joy, 1 syn is a perfectly reasonable way to spend it.
