How Many Syns in Dried Apricots?

By Jenny Updated

Dried apricots sit in an interesting spot on Slimming World, and they catch a lot of members out. The fresh fruit is gloriously Free — you can pile your bowl high with juicy apricots and not count a single syn — but the moment you dehydrate them, everything changes. Drying removes the water, which means the natural sugars become wildly concentrated by weight. A handful of dried apricots that feels like a modest snack can easily contain the sugar of five or six fresh ones, and the plan reflects that with a syn value rather than Free status.

That doesn't mean you should banish them from the cupboard. Dried apricots are a brilliant ingredient when used with intention. They bring a deep, honeyed sweetness and a chewy texture that pairs beautifully with Moroccan-style tagines, lamb stews, couscous salads, and slow-cooked grains. Chopped finely, a few pieces can transform a bowl of porridge or a tray of homemade flapjack-style overnight oats without pushing the syns through the roof. Many members keep a small jar of pre-chopped dried apricots specifically for sprinkling into curries or onto roasted carrots, where a teaspoon delivers far more flavour than its syn cost suggests.

The key is portion discipline. Weigh them rather than guessing — four or five pieces tip the scales at around 30g, and it's astonishingly easy to drift to double that while watching telly. If you're craving something sweet and chewy without the syns, look at fresh apricots, fresh plums, or fresh dates' less concentrated cousins. For baking, soaking chopped dried apricots in a splash of orange juice before stirring them through a SW-friendly cake mixture helps them plump up and spread their sweetness further, so a small amount goes a long way.
