How Many Syns in Cream?

By Jenny Updated

Cream is one of the highest-syn dairy products on Slimming World — double cream in particular sits at 4 syns per tablespoon, which means a modest splash into a pasta sauce or over a pudding can eat through your daily allowance faster than almost any other ingredient. That doesn't mean cream is off the table entirely, but it needs to be treated as something to plan for rather than something to add casually.

Double cream is the richest variety and the one most recipes call for in sauces, soups, and desserts. At 4 syns per 15ml tablespoon, even a 50ml addition to a sauce splits 13 syns across a recipe — still significant per portion. Single cream is considerably lighter at around 1.5 syns per tablespoon, and whipping cream sits between the two at around 2.5 syns. If a recipe can use a lighter cream, it's worth making the swap.

Crème fraîche is often where people are caught out. Full-fat crème fraîche runs at around 2.5 syns per tablespoon — lower than double cream but still a meaningful cost. The good news is that half-fat crème fraîche drops to around 1 syn per tablespoon and behaves very similarly in cooking. Swapping to half-fat crème fraîche in a chicken or mushroom sauce will save you roughly 7–8 syns per 100ml used across the whole dish.

For baking and dessert occasions, Elmlea Light is a popular choice among SW members — it's a blend of buttermilk and vegetable oil that whips and pours like cream but has significantly fewer calories. At around 2.5 syns per tablespoon, it's a genuine half-way option. Anchor squirty cream in aerosol form is also used as a treat: a two-second squirt is around 1.5 syns and provides the visual and textural satisfaction of cream on a pudding for a modest syn spend.

The syn-free alternatives do exist and they're genuinely good. Quark is completely Free and, when mixed into pasta sauces or soups, gives a creamy texture that stands in for cream reasonably well. Fat-free fromage frais and 0% Greek yogurt are also Free and bring richness to both savoury dishes and desserts. None of them are identical to cream, but in the context of a cooked dish they perform well enough that most people can't tell the difference.

What Slimming World members say

Cream comes up in SW discussions mainly in the context of syn-free cooking swaps — quark and fat-free fromage frais are the two most often recommended alternatives for sauces and soups. Members also frequently ask about squirty cream as a lower-syn treat option.

"I make a mushroom stroganoff using half-fat crème fraîche instead of double cream and it tastes just as good. The whole pan comes out at about 4 syns total which splits across two portions, so it's 2 syns each. That's so manageable compared to using double cream which would have been about 16 syns. Just take it off the heat before you add the crème fraîche."

The Anchor squirty cream question is a classic one — members are often pleasantly surprised that a proper squirt of aerosol cream is only 1.5 syns and makes puddings feel like a genuine treat rather than a consolation prize.

"I have a bowl of mixed berries with a generous squirt of Anchor squirty cream most evenings. It's 1.5 syns for the cream and the berries are Free as Speed food. It genuinely feels like a dessert and keeps me from reaching for biscuits. Probably the single best SW habit I've built."
