They feel like a sensible, grown-up snack — far more virtuous than a packet of crisps — and yet syn for syn, they can be surprisingly expensive when you're trying to stretch your daily allowance. The truth is that crackers are almost always Free of nothing: refined wheat, oils and a generous pinch of salt mean they sit firmly on the Syns side of the plan, and the numbers add up faster than most people expect.
A pair of Ritz, those buttery little discs that vanish in two bites, will set you back around 3.5 Syns. Four Jacobs cream crackers, the classic cheese-and-pickle base, land closer to 7 Syns before you've added a thing on top. Oatcakes are a slightly kinder option at roughly 2.5 Syns each, and they bring proper fibre and staying power, which makes them genuinely useful as part of a Speed-led lunch. Rice cakes are the lightest of the lot, usually just shy of 1 Syn apiece, although they're more air than substance.
The honest advice is to weigh rather than count. Cracker sizes vary wildly between brands, and a 'thin' cracker from one box can weigh nearly double a 'thin' from another. Pop them on the scales once and the mystery disappears. Pair them with Free toppings — cottage cheese, tomato, cucumber, ham, light soft cheese — so the crackers themselves are the only Synned element on the plate. Treat them as a vehicle for protein and salad rather than the main event, and a small portion can feel surprisingly generous.
