How Many Syns in Breadsticks?
By Jenny Updated
Breadsticks, or grissini if you fancy the Italian name, are those slim, crunchy batons of baked dough that turn up beside antipasti platters, in lunchboxes, and on the supermarket shelves in skinny cardboard sleeves. On Slimming World they sit firmly in the syns column, which surprises some members because they look so innocent compared with a doorstop of bread or a fistful of crackers.
The catch is that breadsticks are still essentially bread, and they have been dried out so the dough is concentrated, sometimes glossed with a slick of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt or seeds before baking. That density of starch and fat is what nudges them into syn territory rather than letting them slide in as a Healthy Extra B option, because the loose, crumby texture of two small sticks is nowhere near a measured slice of wholemeal.
The good news is that they are genuinely satisfying for the calorie cost: the snap and the toasty flavour scratch the same itch as crisps or crackers, but they are much easier to portion. Two sticks for three and a half syns is a sensible amount to drop into a lunchbox or onto a sharing board, and you can stretch them a long way by dunking into Speed-packed dips made from fat-free natural yoghurt with cucumber, mint and garlic, salsa whizzed from fresh tomatoes, or a roasted red pepper and quark whip.
Avoid the chocolate-coated, seeded-with-cheese or flavoured varieties unless you have checked the syns, because the values climb quickly. Treat breadsticks as a deliberate crunchy extra rather than mindless grazing, weigh them out before you sit down, and they fit very neatly into a plan day without derailing the rest of your meals.
