How Many Syns in Biscuits?

By Jenny Updated

Biscuits and Slimming World have a complicated relationship, and I think that is mostly our own fault. We treat biscuits as the enemy, something to be banished from the biscuit tin entirely, and then we spend three weeks being virtuous before raiding the tin and eating six in a row because we have been thinking about them for so long. That approach does not work. What does work is treating biscuits as a counted syn — knowing exactly what you are spending, planning it in, and sitting down to enjoy them properly.

The good news is that the syn values across most standard UK biscuits are lower than people assume. A single Rich Tea biscuit is 2.5 syns and 38 calories — among the lowest of the traditional biscuits. A Digestive is 3.5 syns, a Bourbon is 3.5 syns, and a Custard Cream is 3 syns. The problem is not the syn value of one biscuit. The problem is that nobody eats one biscuit. Three Digestives with your morning tea is 10.5 syns, and that is a lot of your daily allowance to spend before you have even thought about lunch.

The Jaffa Cake question comes up constantly, and the answer is genuinely good news: one Jaffa Cake is 2.5 syns and 46 calories. Legally, Jaffa Cakes are classified as cakes rather than biscuits (a fact that was settled in a VAT tribunal in 1991), and from a Slimming World perspective they are one of the best value teatime treats you can have. Two with a cup of tea is 5 syns and feels like a proper treat.

At the other end of the scale, Chocolate Digestives and Choc Hobnobs both land at 4.5 syns per biscuit. A couple with a cup of tea is 9 syns, which is a meaningful portion of most people's daily allowance. They are not forbidden, but they need to be a deliberate choice rather than a reflexive reach into the tin.

The most important free option to know about is the Healthy Extra B allowance. Alpen Light bars — two bars counted together as a single HExB — are completely Free, and they are the closest thing Slimming World has to a sanctioned biscuit substitute. Two Alpen Light bars feel genuinely satisfying and cost you nothing on the syn front. Ryvita crispbreads used as your HExB are another option, though they obviously feel quite different from a sweet biscuit.

Fig Rolls are worth a mention as an underrated option. One Fig Roll is 3.5 syns and 72 calories, but they are denser and more filling than most other biscuits — the fig filling adds actual fibre and substance. One or two with tea can keep you going in a way that two Rich Teas simply cannot.

The most sustainable approach is to decide in advance which biscuits are going in your syn bank today, put them on a plate, and eat them away from the biscuit tin. Standing at the kitchen counter with the lid off is how a 3-syn treat becomes an 18-syn incident.

Alpen Light bars (as HExB)

Free when used as your Healthy Extra B

Two Alpen Light bars counted as your HExB allowance are completely Free, making them the best value biscuit-adjacent treat on the plan. They taste genuinely sweet and satisfying, and there are several flavours — caramel and sultana, chocolate and fudge, lemon drizzle — so they do not feel like a punishment.

Ryvita crispbreads (as HExB)

Free when used as your Healthy Extra B

Two Ryvita crispbreads as your HExB are completely Free. They are obviously savoury rather than sweet, so they work better with a smear of Marmite or a slice of lean ham than as a direct biscuit replacement — but they are filling and satisfying in a different way.

Nak'd bars

Around 5 syns per bar

Higher in syns than a Rich Tea but much more filling because they are made from whole dates and nuts. If you are looking for something that genuinely keeps you satisfied between meals rather than just hitting a sweet craving, a Nak'd bar is worth the extra syns.

What Slimming World members say

Rich Tea biscuits are the most-asked-about biscuit in the Slimming World community because they are the default low-syn biscuit choice — and the Fingers variant is better value than members often realise.

"2 :)" — first reply to "Anyone know the syns in a Rich Tea?". Then: "Asda ones are 1.5 syns"

via Mumsnet — Anyone know the syns in a Rich Tea?

"Rich Tea Fingers are only 1 each 😉 I keep my own biscuit tin stocked with those while the OH and kids get all the others!"

via Mumsnet — Rich Tea thread

Community comparison list that circulates widely on Facebook groups: Malted milk 2 syns, Rich Tea 2 syns, Ginger Nuts 2.5 syns, Bourbon 3 syns — Rich Tea and Malted Milk are consistently the go-to options for members who want a biscuit with their tea without spending more than 2 syns.

FAQs

How many syns is a Rich Tea biscuit?

A single Rich Tea biscuit is 2.5 syns and around 38 calories, making it one of the lowest-syn traditional biscuits you can have. Two with a cup of tea comes to 5 syns — a very manageable afternoon treat if you plan it in. Rich Teas are lower in syn than Digestives (3.5 syns), Hobnobs (3.5 syns), and significantly lower than Chocolate Digestives or Choc Hobnobs (both 4.5 syns). If you love a biscuit with your tea and want to keep the syn cost as low as possible, Rich Teas are a sensible regular choice.

Are Jaffa Cakes low in syns?

Yes — Jaffa Cakes are one of the best-value teatime treats on Slimming World at 2.5 syns and 46 calories each. They are technically classified as cakes rather than biscuits (a distinction that was tested in a legal VAT case in 1991), and they sit at the same syn level as Rich Tea biscuits despite feeling more indulgent. Two Jaffa Cakes is 5 syns. The chocolate, sponge, and orange jelly combination satisfies a sweet tooth in a way that a plain Rich Tea does not, which is why they are such a popular choice on the plan.

Can I have Alpen Light bars for free on Slimming World?

Yes — two Alpen Light bars counted together as your Healthy Extra B allowance are completely Free on Slimming World. This is one of the most popular HExB choices because Alpen Light bars feel like a genuine treat rather than a compromise. They come in a range of flavours including caramel and sultana, chocolate and fudge, and lemon drizzle. If you use them outside of your HExB allowance — as an extra snack on top — they do carry a syn value, so it is important to use them specifically as your allocated HExB.

What is the lowest-syn biscuit on Slimming World?

Rich Tea biscuits and Jaffa Cakes are both 2.5 syns per biscuit, making them the joint lowest-syn options among common UK supermarket biscuits. Custard Creams and Oreos are 3 syns each, followed by Digestives, Hobnobs, Bourbons, and Fig Rolls at 3.5 syns. Chocolate-coated biscuits like Chocolate Digestives and Choc Hobnobs are the most syn-heavy of the mainstream options at 4.5 syns each. If you are trying to keep your biscuit syn spend as low as possible, Rich Teas or Jaffa Cakes are the best starting point.

Why do I keep going over my syns with biscuits?

Almost always it is because biscuits are being eaten standing up, near the biscuit tin, without a fixed portion in mind. One biscuit leads to another because the decision of when to stop has not been made in advance. The most effective change you can make is to decide before you open the tin how many you are having, put them on a plate or a saucer, move away from the tin, and sit down. The ritual of a planned biscuit with a cup of tea is genuinely satisfying. The habit of dipping into the tin while doing something else is where the syns disappear without any enjoyment to show for them.

How many syns is a Chocolate Hobnob?

A single McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnob is 4.5 syns and around 82 calories. The Dark Chocolate Hobnob is the same at 4.5 syns (81 calories) — the swap from milk to dark chocolate makes a negligible difference because the oaty biscuit base is identical and the chocolate layer is the same weight. Two Choc Hobnobs with a cup of tea is 9 syns, which is the bulk of most members' daily allowance, so this is a biscuit that genuinely benefits from being a single planned treat rather than a regular daily habit. If you specifically love the Hobnob flavour but want to halve the syn spend, the Plain Hobnob (no chocolate) at 3.5 syns gives you the same oaty texture for one fewer syn per biscuit.

Are Hobnob Nibbles low syn on Slimming World?

Hobnob Nibbles are not as low-syn as the name might suggest. The small 30g grab bag is around 7.5 syns and 145 calories — significantly more than a single Chocolate Hobnob because you're eating roughly 18 small bite-size pieces rather than one biscuit. The Nibbles format makes them very easy to eat without registering the quantity, which is the same trap as a sharing bag of Haribo. If you want them on plan, decant a smaller measured portion — about 10 to 12 Nibbles is roughly 3.5 syns — and put the bag away. The Salted Caramel and Chocolate Nibbles tubs share the same syn-per-gram density, so the syn count scales linearly with the portion you weigh out.

What's the difference between a Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate Hobnob in syns?

There is no meaningful syn difference. Both McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs and Dark Chocolate Hobnobs are 4.5 syns per 17g biscuit. The dark version is one calorie lower (81 vs 82) which doesn't affect the rounded syn value at all. The choice between them is purely about flavour preference. Plain Hobnobs without chocolate are 3.5 syns each, so the chocolate coating adds exactly one syn per biscuit regardless of whether it's milk or dark. If you find dark chocolate more satisfying per bite — and many members do, because the stronger flavour makes a single biscuit feel more like a treat — it can be a useful psychological swap even though the maths is identical.
