How Many Syns in Bread?
By Jenny Updated
Bread is one of the most misunderstood foods on Slimming World — and also one of the most useful, once you understand how it works. The short version: many wholemeal and brown loaves allow 2 slices as your Healthy Extra B allowance, making them completely Free within that daily allocation. White bread, sourdough, and most artisan or seeded loaves don't qualify for HexB, meaning they need to be synned.
The HexB allowance is designed to provide fibre, and that's why it specifically favours wholemeal and wholegrain breads over white. Two slices of a qualifying Warburtons Wholemeal Toastie or Hovis Granary as your HexB is genuinely a generous amount of bread — plenty for a sandwich at lunch. The critical thing is to check your specific brand in the official Slimming World app, because qualifying varieties change and not every wholemeal loaf on the shelf will qualify.
If you want bread outside your HexB, you'll need to syn it. Two slices of standard white bread typically run to around 5–5.5 syns, which isn't enormous but adds up quickly if you're having toast at breakfast and a sandwich at lunch. A bagel is around 10 syns — a significant chunk of a daily allowance. Croissants and pastries are similarly high, sitting around 10 syns for a standard-sized version.
Thin breads and protein breads can be a middle ground worth exploring. A single Warburtons Thin or similar thin-sliced bread is around 1.5–2 syns per slice, which gives you a syn-efficient way to have toast or a lighter sandwich if you've already used your HexB. Some protein-enriched loaves are lower in carbs and calories, making them better value for your syn spend.
For HexB alternatives that aren't bread, Ryvita crispbreads are a popular choice — typically 2–3 Ryvita count as an HexB. A wholemeal pitta can also qualify. The principle is the same: these are fibre-rich, filling options that provide a daily nutritional foundation on the plan.

What Slimming World members say
Bread generates lively debate in SW communities, mainly around which specific loaves qualify for HexB and how strictly the slice weight should be observed. The general advice from experienced members is always to check the app rather than assume.
"I made the mistake of buying a seeded wholemeal loaf thinking it would be fine for HexB — it wasn't, and I was adding about 6 syns per sandwich without realising. Lesson learned: always check the app before you buy rather than after. The Warburtons Wholemeal Toastie is rock solid for HexB though."

The sourdough question comes up a lot as it's become so popular. Unfortunately, sourdough — including wholemeal versions — typically does not qualify for HexB and needs to be synned. This surprises people who assume anything wholegrain would qualify.
"I was gutted when I found out my fancy sourdough from the bakery didn't qualify for HexB — one thick slice was about 6 syns. I've swapped to Kingsmill 50/50 for weekday lunches and save the sourdough for weekends when I've planned for the syns. Worth it though!"
