Semi-Skimmed Milk — calories & nutrition

By Jenny Updated

Semi-skimmed milk is the most popular type of milk in the UK, found in virtually every British household. It contains around 50 calories per 100ml — roughly halfway between whole milk (68 kcal) and skimmed milk (35 kcal) — and provides an excellent balance of protein, calcium, and a moderate amount of fat that makes it creamy enough to actually enjoy in tea, coffee, and cooking.

For weight management, semi-skimmed milk is a smart choice. The protein content (3.6g per 100ml) contributes meaningfully to daily intake, and calcium-rich dairy foods have been shown in research to support healthy body composition. A glass of semi-skimmed milk with breakfast or post-exercise provides around 10g of high-quality protein and approximately a third of the recommended daily calcium intake.

On Slimming World, semi-skimmed milk is a Healthy Extra A (HexA) choice. The allowance is 350ml per day, which equates to 175 calories. This covers a generous bowl of cereal or a few cups of tea and coffee throughout the day. Members who prefer skimmed milk get a slightly larger 400ml allowance for the same Syn count. The HexA is one of the most practically useful allowances on the plan — it means your daily milk intake in hot drinks is covered without touching your Syn budget.

FAQs

How many calories are in semi-skimmed milk?

Semi-skimmed milk contains approximately 50 calories per 100ml. A standard 200ml glass delivers around 100 kcal, while a larger 250ml glass is about 125 kcal. The Slimming World HexA allowance of 350ml contains approximately 175 calories. These figures are for plain semi-skimmed cow's milk — flavoured or sweetened milks vary considerably and will typically be higher in calories.

Is semi-skimmed milk a Healthy Extra A on Slimming World?

Yes — semi-skimmed milk is a Healthy Extra A (HexA) on Slimming World. The daily allowance is 350ml. This covers your calcium needs for the day and can be used across multiple drinks and meals. If you prefer skimmed milk, the HexA allowance is slightly more generous at 400ml. Whole milk is also a HexA but at a smaller 200ml allowance. You receive one HexA per day as part of your Food Optimising plan.

Is semi-skimmed or skimmed milk better for weight loss?

Skimmed milk is lower in calories and fat — around 35 kcal per 100ml versus 50 kcal for semi-skimmed. Over a day, using 350ml of skimmed milk instead of semi-skimmed saves around 52 calories. However, both are excellent choices for weight loss, and the small calorie difference is unlikely to be meaningful. Some research suggests the fat in semi-skimmed milk improves satiety and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Choose whichever you actually enjoy drinking — consistency matters more than small calorie differences.

Can I use semi-skimmed milk in cooking on Slimming World?

Yes — small amounts of semi-skimmed milk used in cooking, such as in sauces, mashed potato, or scrambled eggs, are generally considered negligible on Slimming World and do not need to be Synned. The plan acknowledges that trace amounts of milk used as a cooking ingredient are not the same as drinking a glass. If you are using a larger amount — say 200ml or more in a recipe — you should count it against your HexA allowance or add the appropriate Syns for any excess beyond your daily allowance.
