Avocado — calories & nutrition
By Jenny Updated
Avocado has become one of the most talked-about foods of the past decade — but it's also one of the most misunderstood when it comes to calories. People either treat it as a superfood to eat in limitless quantities or fear it completely because of its fat content. The reality, as with most foods, sits somewhere in the middle and is well worth understanding properly.
A whole medium avocado (around 136g of flesh) contains approximately 322 calories and 30g of fat. That makes it one of the most calorie-dense fruits — higher in calories than a whole banana, a large apple, and even a 25g handful of mixed nuts on a per-gram basis. These aren't empty calories, though: almost all the fat in avocado is monounsaturated oleic acid, the same type found in olive oil and associated with heart health, reduced inflammation, and improved cholesterol profiles.
The reason avocado is so filling despite being a fruit is precisely its fat content. Fat slows gastric emptying — the rate at which your stomach empties into the small intestine — which means you feel satisfied for longer after eating avocado than you would after eating a lower-fat food of equivalent calories. A half avocado on wholegrain toast will keep you full for three to four hours in a way that a bowl of cornflakes with the same calorie count simply won't.
Fibre is another key part of the avocado story. A whole avocado contains around 10g of dietary fibre, which is over a third of an adult's recommended daily intake. Fibre feeds beneficial gut bacteria, slows sugar absorption, and further contributes to that long-lasting feeling of fullness. This combination of healthy fat and fibre is why nutritionists increasingly regard avocado as an excellent food for blood sugar control and sustained energy.
In practical UK calorie terms, a half avocado is around 160 calories — less than a standard chocolate bar, more nutritious in almost every measurable way, and far more filling. On toast, in a salad, blended into a dressing, or smashed with lemon and chilli on a piece of sourdough, it earns its place in a balanced diet even when calories are being watched carefully.

Avocado and weight loss
Avocado is not a Free Food on Slimming World. Unlike most fruits, which are Free due to their low calorie density, avocado is Synned because of its significant fat content — approximately 7 Syns per 100g of flesh, or around 10–11 Syns for half a medium avocado.
This surprises a lot of people who've been told avocado is a health food, and it is — but Slimming World's Syn system is based on calorie density, not nutritional quality. High-fat foods, even healthy ones, are Synned to keep overall calorie intake in check.
For calorie-counting or general healthy eating outside the SW framework, avocado is an excellent choice for weight management. Its combination of monounsaturated fats and fibre produces strong satiety signals, and studies have shown that regular avocado consumption is associated with lower body weight and smaller waist circumference in large population studies.
The practical approach is to use avocado as a replacement for less nutritious fats — swap butter on toast for smashed avocado, or replace mayonnaise in sandwiches with sliced avocado — rather than adding it on top of an already-fat-rich meal.
