Bananas have had a bit of an unfair reputation in diet culture, and I think it is time to set the record straight. The idea that bananas are fattening is one of those myths that just will not budge, despite the fact that a medium banana comes in at around 105 calories. Yes, they are higher in calories than, say, a handful of strawberries, but they are also considerably more filling, more nutritious, and far more satisfying when you actually need something to keep you going.
Bananas are packed with potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and magnesium. They contain natural sugars — fructose, glucose, and sucrose — which your body processes differently to refined sugar. The fibre content (around 3g in a medium banana) slows that sugar absorption right down, so you get a sustained energy release rather than a spike and crash.
For anyone following Slimming World, the good news is that bananas are a Free Food, which means you can eat them without measuring or counting. They are not a Speed Food — and that is an important distinction I will come back to — but they absolutely belong in a healthy, balanced eating plan.
The fear around bananas often comes from comparison to lower-calorie fruits like strawberries or melon. But comparing them calorie-for-calorie misses the point. A banana keeps you full for hours. It stops you reaching for the biscuit tin at 11am. That is worth far more than the 40-odd extra calories compared to an apple.

Banana and weight loss
Bananas are one of those foods that dieters have been wrongly warned away from for years, and it frustrates me. Yes, they have more calories than some fruits. No, that does not make them bad for weight loss.
On Slimming World, bananas are a Free Food. You do not need to weigh them, count them, or feel guilty about them. However — and this is worth knowing — they are not classed as Speed Food, unlike many other fruits. Speed Foods are those with a lower energy density (fewer calories per gram), such as strawberries, melon, and raspberries. Filling a third of your plate with Speed Foods is part of the SW strategy for accelerating loss, so bananas on their own do not tick that box. That said, they are still Free and still a perfectly healthy choice.
For general calorie counting, a medium banana is around 105 calories — moderate for fruit, but the fibre and resistant starch (especially in slightly underripe bananas) make them extraordinarily filling. Resistant starch also acts as a prebiotic, feeding good gut bacteria. Research suggests it may even improve insulin sensitivity over time.
Bananas are an excellent pre-workout snack. The combination of fast and slow-release carbohydrates makes them one of the best natural fuels for exercise, which in turn supports weight loss. Eat one 30 to 45 minutes before a walk, gym session, or fitness class and you will notice the difference in your energy levels.

Banana is a Free Food — no weighing, no synning. It is not a Speed Food, so it doesn't count toward your ⅓ Speed target at meals.

Yes, bananas are a Free Food on Slimming World, which means you can eat them freely without weighing or counting them towards a Syn allowance. They have been Free under every version of the plan I can remember. This makes them one of the easiest on-plan snacks to grab when you are out and about, and one of the most satisfying too. Just bear in mind that they are not a Speed Food, so they do not count towards your one-third Speed Food target at mealtimes.
How many calories in a banana?
It depends on the size. A small banana at around 100g contains approximately 89 calories. A medium banana, which is the size most of us would call an average banana, comes in at around 105 to 107 calories for 118 to 120g. A large banana at 150g is closer to 134 calories. Dried banana chips are a very different story — a 30g portion can contain around 147 calories and 8g of fat, so they are not the same thing as a fresh banana at all.
Are bananas good for weight loss?
They absolutely can be, yes. The fibre content in a banana helps you feel full for longer, which means you are less likely to reach for something less healthy an hour later. The resistant starch in slightly underripe bananas may also support gut health and improve how your body manages blood sugar. Compared to processed snacks like biscuits or cereal bars, a banana is genuinely one of the better choices you can make. The key is eating them as part of a balanced diet rather than worrying about them being somehow harmful.
How many calories in a frozen banana?
A frozen banana contains roughly the same calories as a fresh one — around 89 calories per 100g. Freezing does not significantly change the calorie content of fruit. Frozen bananas are brilliant blended into smoothies, or blended on their own to make a single-ingredient banana ice cream, which is one of my favourite low-calorie dessert tricks. If you have bananas going brown on the counter, peel them and pop them in the freezer rather than throwing them away.
Is banana a Speed Food on Slimming World?
No, and this is a question I see come up all the time. Bananas are a Free Food on Slimming World, but they are not classified as a Speed Food. Speed Foods are foods with a lower energy density — generally those with a higher water content, like strawberries, melon, cucumber, and most vegetables. Bananas are denser in calories relative to their weight, so they do not qualify. This does not mean you should avoid them — they are still completely on plan and a great snack. It just means they would not count towards filling a third of your plate with Speed Food.
