How Many Syns in Single Cream?

By Jenny Updated

Single cream is the lightest of the pouring creams sold in British supermarkets, typically containing around 18% fat, which sits well below double cream's 48% but comfortably above the milky thinness of half-fat alternatives. On Slimming World, that middling fat content translates directly into syns, and single cream is one of those sneaky ingredients that can derail a Food Optimising day faster than you might expect. A generous glug over a bowl of stewed fruit or a swirl into a pasta sauce feels modest in volume, but the syns add up quickly because cream is energy-dense by design.

A tablespoon (roughly 15ml) costs about 2.5 syns, while a 30ml splash, the sort you might pour without thinking, lands at around 5 syns. That is a quarter of a standard daily allowance gone on something that disappears into a sauce. For comparison, the same volume of fat-free natural yogurt is free on the plan, which is why so many SW members lean on it as a stand-in for cream in everything from carbonara to korma. Quark, fromage frais, and the lighter cream alternatives sold as squirty bottles can also play similar roles depending on the dish.

That said, single cream is not banned, and treating it as a forbidden ingredient tends to backfire. A measured tablespoon stirred into a soup at the end of cooking, or a thin pour over a crumble on a Sunday, can be syn-counted accurately and enjoyed without guilt. The trick is to weigh or measure rather than free-pour, because the difference between 15ml and 50ml is easy to misjudge by eye but enormous on your syn total. Treat it as a finishing touch rather than a base ingredient and the numbers stay manageable.
