How Many Syns in Low Syn Sweets?

By Jenny Updated

One of the biggest mistakes I made in my first few weeks of Slimming World was trying to cut out sweets entirely. I figured if I could just push through the cravings, I'd be better off. What actually happened was that I white-knuckled it for about ten days and then ate an entire bag of Haribo Starmix in one evening while watching telly. Every single syn for the week, gone.

The thing about banning a food entirely is that it gives it enormous power. It becomes the thing you're not allowed, which makes you want it more. And when you eventually do cave — because most of us will, eventually — you don't have just a little, you have all of it, because you've been so good for so long and you deserve it. That thinking, I've learned, is the enemy of a sustainable plan.

What works infinitely better is planning your sweets. A small, deliberate allocation of syns that means you never have to feel like you're doing without. If you know you can have a couple of Jelly Babies tonight, you're not thinking about sweets all day. They're coming. It's fine. You can relax.

The good news is that many popular sweets are surprisingly manageable on Slimming World. The trick is knowing which ones to reach for. Individually wrapped sweets and small formats are your best friends here, because portion size is already decided for you.

At the lower end, Drumstick lollies are a genuine revelation — 2.5 syns each, they take ages to eat, and the flavour is intense and satisfying. Parma Violets are another low-syn classic at 2 syns per roll. Mr Chews come in at 2 syns per two pieces. These are the sweets you want for a long journey or a slow afternoon when you need something to last.

Step up slightly and you've got Millions, Jelly Babies, and Chewits all clustering around the 4 to 4.5 syn mark for a sensible portion. Haribo Starmix and Tangfastics are 5 syns for five pieces — still manageable as a planned treat. The danger with Haribo isn't the syn value of a small portion, it's that the bag is enormous and it's very easy to lose track.

Rowntree's Jelly Tots are worth knowing about too — a full 38g bag is 7 syns, which feels like a lot until you compare it to the alternative of an entire sharing bag of something you grabbed without thinking.

Alternatives worth knowing: fresh fruit is completely free, frozen grapes are one of the most satisfying sweet snacks I've found, and medjool dates give you that caramel, chewy sweetness for about 2 syns each.

Lower-syn alternatives

Swaps that keep the feel of the original without the syn hit.

Fresh fruit

Free

Fresh fruit is a Speed Food and completely free on Slimming World. Grapes, strawberries, mango chunks, and melon all hit that sweet craving without touching your syn allowance. They won't replicate a Drumstick lolly, but as a go-to when you just want something sweet after a meal, they're hard to beat.

Frozen grapes

Free

Pop a bunch of grapes in the freezer for a couple of hours and you get something genuinely special. They become firm and icy and sweet in a way that feels more like a treat than plain fruit. Still completely free. Great for summer evenings or whenever you want something cold and sweet without spending any syns at all.

Medjool dates

Around 2 syns each

If you want something rich and properly sweet with a chewy texture, medjool dates deliver in a way that feels indulgent. They're around 2 syns each and incredibly satisfying. One or two with a cup of tea in the afternoon is a planned treat that feels generous. Available in most supermarkets and they keep well.

FAQs

What are the lowest syn sweets on Slimming World?

The lowest syn sweets are Parma Violets at 2 syns per roll and Mr Chews at 2 syns per two pieces. Drumstick lollies are 2.5 syns each and are particularly popular because they take a long time to eat, which makes them feel more satisfying per syn than a sweet you'd finish in seconds. Millions, Jelly Babies, and Chewits all cluster around the 4 to 4.5 syn mark for a standard portion. The key is knowing your portion before you start rather than eating from a bag and losing count halfway through.

Are Haribo sweets syn free on Slimming World?

No, Haribo sweets are not syn free. They do need to be counted, but a small portion is absolutely manageable within your daily allowance. Five pieces of Haribo Starmix or Tangfastics works out at around 5 syns. The challenge with Haribo is portion discipline — the bags are large and the sweets are small, so it's very easy to eat far more than five pieces without realising. If you want Haribo on plan, decant a measured portion into a small dish before you start and put the rest away. That single habit makes an enormous difference.

How many syns is a bag of Jelly Babies?

A portion of five Jelly Babies (around 25g) is 4.5 syns on Slimming World. A standard large bag of Jelly Babies is typically around 190g, which would work out at somewhere in the region of 34 syns for the whole bag — so treating the entire bag as one serving is not a good idea. The best approach is to weigh out around 25g, put them in a small bowl, and enjoy that as your planned sweet treat. You still get the Jelly Baby experience and it costs you less than 5 syns.

Can I eat sweets every day on Slimming World?

Yes, you absolutely can include sweets every day as long as they fit within your syn allowance. Most Slimming World members have a daily budget of 5 to 15 syns, and choosing lower-syn sweets like Drumstick lollies, Parma Violets, or a few Jelly Babies means you can enjoy something sweet each day without it impacting your weight loss. Many successful long-term members find that a planned daily treat — something they look forward to — is what keeps them on plan consistently, rather than trying to be perfect and then falling off completely.

Are pick and mix sweets high in syns?

Pick and mix is tricky because you often don't know the exact brand or weight of what you're eating. As a rough guide, most standard sweets are around 5 syns per 25g to 30g, so a small scoop of pick and mix might cost you 5 to 8 syns depending on what you've chosen and how generous the scoop was. Foam sweets tend to be a little lower in syns than dense chewy sweets. If you enjoy pick and mix, the safest approach is to choose a small quantity, keep it to one handful, and log it as approximately 5 to 6 syns rather than guessing low.
