How Many Syns in Granola?

Granola is one of those breakfast cereals that looks virtuous on the shelf but lands with a thud in your Syn budget on Slimming World. Unlike plain porridge oats or shredded wheat — both of which qualify as Healthy Extra B choices — granola is loaded with added oil (usually coconut, sunflower or rapeseed) and a generous helping of honey, maple syrup or brown sugar to bind those moreish clusters together. That oil-and-sugar combination is what gives granola its glorious crunch, and unfortunately it is also what pushes the Syn value sky high. A modest 45g serving — which, let's be honest, barely fills the bottom of a cereal bowl — typically clocks in at around 8 Syns, while a more realistic 60g portion edges closer to 11 Syns. For many members, that is the entire daily allowance gone before you have even left the house.
The trickier part is the portion creep. Granola is dense, so what looks like a small scoop is often double the recommended serving on the box. Pouring it straight from the bag into a bowl with no scales is a fast track to a 75-100g portion, which can quietly cost you 14-18 Syns. Even the so-called "low-sugar" or "protein" granolas tend to use more oil or nut butter to keep the texture right, so the Syns rarely drop below 6 per 45g.
If you adore granola, the Slimming World-friendly workaround is to make your own toasted oat clusters using a HExB portion of oats, a spritz of low-calorie cooking spray, sweetener and spices — baked until golden. You get the crunch, keep your HExB, and save the Syns for something properly indulgent later in the day.
