How Many Syns in Cheese?

By Jenny Updated

Cheese is the one food I hear people say they couldn't give up before starting Slimming World — and the good news is, you really don't have to. With a bit of know-how around syn values and your Healthy Extra A allowance, you can still enjoy cheese regularly on the plan without derailing your losses. The key is knowing which cheeses qualify as HexA, which ones are syn-free in their own right, and which ones need to be synned carefully.

Your Healthy Extra A allowance is where cheese gets interesting. A 30g portion of reduced-fat Cheddar, 40g of Edam, or 45g of light Mozzarella can all be used as your daily HexA — meaning they count as completely Free within that allowance. This is worth using thoughtfully: grating reduced-fat Cheddar over a pasta bake or adding Edam to a sandwich means you get the flavour hit without spending any syns at all.

Full-fat cheese is a different story and the syn values are significant. Regular mature Cheddar runs at around 5 syns per 25g — that's roughly a small handful of grated cheese. Brie, Camembert, and similar soft cheeses are around 4–4.5 syns per 25g. These aren't foods to avoid entirely, but they need to be counted carefully, especially if you're adding them to recipes where it's easy to lose track of quantities.

Cottage cheese is a brilliant exception to be aware of: plain, low-fat cottage cheese is a Free food on Slimming World regardless of your HexA allowance. It's not glamorous, but it's genuinely useful — blend it into pasta sauces for a creamy texture, serve it alongside jacket potatoes, or use it as a topping on crispbreads. Some people are surprised to find it listed as Free but it earns that status through its low fat and calorie content.

Quark is another one worth keeping in the fridge — technically it's a fresh soft cheese and it's completely Free. It works beautifully as a substitute for cream cheese in cheesecake bases, stirred into pasta sauces, or mixed with a sweetener and vanilla to make a syn-free dessert topping. Between quark, cottage cheese, and your HexA allowance, a SW kitchen has more cheese options than people realise.

What Slimming World members say

Cheese questions are among the most frequent in SW groups and forums — particularly around HexA choices and whether specific brands qualify. The reduced-fat vs full-fat distinction trips people up often, and members regularly remind each other to check the official app rather than assuming.

"I've been using my HexA as 30g of reduced-fat Cheddar every day for two years and it's honestly what keeps me on plan. I just weigh it out each morning and put it in a little pot. Sprinkled over my lunch and tea it goes a long way. Sounds boring but it works."

Cottage cheese being a Free food catches people off guard regularly — there's a persistent belief in the community that it must have syns. It doesn't, as long as you're buying the plain low-fat variety rather than flavoured or full-fat versions.

"Honestly cottage cheese has been a revelation for me on SW. I mix it with smoked salmon and a squeeze of lemon on a Ryvita (from my HexB) and it's like a little luxury lunch for zero syns. Never would have touched it before but now I love it."
