How Many Syns in Cheerios?

By Jenny Updated

Cheerios occupy an interesting spot on Slimming World, and the answer to whether they're a sensible choice depends almost entirely on which box you reach for at the supermarket. The classic Original Cheerios, those plain little oat hoops with no added honey or chocolate coating, are one of the better breakfast cereals available to members.

A 40g portion qualifies as a Healthy Extra B choice, which means you can have a generous bowl with skimmed milk (using part of your Healthy Extra A) for zero Syns, providing fibre, slow-release energy and a satisfying crunch that holds up far better in milk than many puffed alternatives. That's a proper breakfast that won't leave you raiding the biscuit tin by mid-morning, and it ticks the wholegrain box that the plan rightly encourages.

The trouble starts when you wander into the flavoured varieties. Honey Cheerios, Multigrain, Chocolate and the various limited-edition spin-offs do not qualify as a Healthy Extra B, because the added sugars and coatings push them outside the criteria.

They become Syn-counted cereals, and the Syns add up faster than you'd expect once you weigh out a realistic portion rather than the optimistic 30g printed on the side of the box. Many members find that a 40g bowl of Honey Cheerios costs them roughly four Syns, which is fine occasionally but a steep daily breakfast price.

The honest advice is to keep Original Cheerios as a regular staple, treat the flavoured boxes as an occasional swap, and always weigh your portion rather than tipping freely. A kitchen scale earns its keep at breakfast more than almost anywhere else in a Slimming World kitchen.

Lower-syn alternatives

Swaps that keep the feel of the original without the syn hit.

Weetabix (HExB)

Free as HExB

Two Weetabix count as a Healthy Extra B and are completely free, just like 40g of Original Cheerios. They are slightly more filling thanks to higher fibre content and hold up well with hot or cold milk. A solid swap if you fancy a change from hoops.

Bran Flakes (HExB)

Free as HExB

A 40g portion of Bran Flakes qualifies as a Healthy Extra B for zero syns. They offer more fibre than Cheerios, which helps keep you fuller for longer. Top with fresh berries and your HExA skimmed milk for a satisfying breakfast.

FAQs

How many syns in Cheerios?

Original Cheerios are free when eaten as a 40g Healthy Extra B portion. Outside of the HExB allowance, 30g is about 3 syns and 40g is 4 syns. Honey Cheerios are higher at 4 syns per 30g and do not qualify as a Healthy Extra B. Chocolate Cheerios are steeper still at 5 syns per 30g.

Are Cheerios a Healthy Extra on Slimming World?

Original Cheerios qualify as a Healthy Extra B at 40g, making them free as part of your daily allowance. However, flavoured varieties like Honey, Multigrain and Chocolate Cheerios do not qualify because the added sugars push them outside the HExB criteria. Always check which variety you are pouring.

Can you have Honey Cheerios on Slimming World?

You can, but they must be counted as syns. Honey Cheerios cost about 4 syns per 30g and do not qualify as a Healthy Extra B like the Original version does. A 40g bowl would be around 5 syns. If you want a free cereal option, stick to the plain Original Cheerios at 40g as your HExB.

What cereal is best on Slimming World?

Original Cheerios at 40g as a HExB are one of the best options, along with Weetabix, Bran Flakes and plain cornflakes which also qualify as Healthy Extra B choices. These give you a filling breakfast for zero syns when paired with your HExA milk. Avoid sugar-coated varieties which sit at 3 to 5 syns per 30g.
