Best Low-Syn Crisps on Slimming World (Ranked)

7 ranked Updated 2026-04-26

Crisps are the one snack category where I see people come completely unstuck on Slimming World. Not because crisps are some terrible forbidden food — they absolutely are not — but because standard crisps are genuinely high in syns and it is very easy to eat far more than one bag in one sitting. I'm not judging anyone. I've eaten four bags of Quavers watching a film and told myself it was fine. It was not fine.

The good news is that the lighter crisp category has exploded in the last five years. We're not limited to sad rice cakes anymore. Popchips, Velvet Crunch, Snack a Jacks — there are actual flavourful, crunchy options that clock in at 3.5 to 5 syns a bag, which is very manageable within a 15-syn daily allowance.

The key thing I've learned is that texture and volume matter as much as syn count for managing cravings. A bag of airy Quavers might be 4.5 syns, but because they're light and you're eating quite a few of them, it tends to feel more satisfying than a denser snack at the same syn count. Meanwhile Velvet Crunch is surprisingly light and flavourful for its syn count — it's one of my best discoveries in the last couple of years.

I've also included Penn State Pretzels on this list because they're so different in texture from a standard crisp that they genuinely scratch a different itch. If you're someone who snacks more out of habit or boredom than actual hunger, the act of eating pretzels — crunchy, salty, you can eat them one at a time — can extend the snacking experience in a way that a bag of crisps wolfed in two minutes doesn't.

One rule I live by: buy single bags, not the multipack. Once the multipack is open in the cupboard, it's just a question of time. Put one bag in your lunchbox, enjoy it properly, and leave the rest for another day.

The rankings

1

Popchips Original (23g bag)

4 syns 100 kcal

1 standard snack bag (23g)

Popchips are popped rather than fried or baked, which gives them a genuinely satisfying crunch that lighter rice-puff snacks don't achieve. At 4 syns for a 23g bag, you're getting real volume and real crunch for your syn spend. The original flavour is clean and moreish.

  • Substantial crunch — feels like a proper crisp, not a diet compromise
  • Good volume for the syn count
  • Available in most UK supermarkets and many coffee shops
  • Several flavour varieties all at similar syn counts
  • Slightly more expensive than standard crisp brands
  • 23g bag can feel small if you're used to standard 30g bags
2

Velvet Crunch Prawn Cocktail (20g)

3.5 syns 72 kcal

1 bag (20g)

An underrated gem of the low-syn crisp world. Velvet Crunch are baked and extremely light in texture, but the flavour — particularly the prawn cocktail — is genuinely strong and satisfying. At only 3.5 syns, they're outstanding value and I'd argue they're one of the least-discussed great SW snack finds.

  • Lowest syn count of the crunchy snacks on this list at 3.5
  • Surprisingly strong flavour for such a light snack
  • Widely available — Morrisons, Tesco, Asda all stock them
  • Baked rather than fried for a lighter texture
  • Very light texture — if you want a dense, proper crunch, these may not satisfy
  • 20g bag is smaller than most competitors
3

Pom-Bears (13g snack bag)

3.5 syns 64 kcal

1 small snack bag (13g)

The smallest bag on this list, but at 3.5 syns they're genuinely good value. The bear shape is surprisingly useful for mindful eating — you tend to eat them one at a time rather than grabbing handfuls. Perfect for lunchboxes and for those days when you want a small savoury treat rather than a full snack.

  • Very low syn count at 3.5
  • Individual shape encourages slower, more mindful eating
  • Good for kids' lunchboxes — feels like a 'normal' snack
  • Mild potato flavour works for everyone in the family
  • 13g bag is quite small — this is a mini treat, not a filling snack
  • Mild flavour won't satisfy if you're craving something really savoury
4

Quavers (16g bag)

4.5 syns 85 kcal

1 standard bag (16g)

The Quaver is perhaps the most Slimming World-famous crisp for a reason — they're airy and light so a single bag contains a lot of individual pieces, which makes it feel like a more generous portion than the 16g weight suggests. Great for distracted snacking because they take a while to get through.

  • Large number of individual pieces per bag — feels generous
  • Light, airy texture satisfies the crunch craving without being dense
  • Universally loved — safe option for all ages
  • Consistent, predictable syn value
  • 4.5 syns for 16g is slightly less impressive value by weight
  • Very light flavour — if you want something punchy, these may underwhelm
5

Snack a Jacks Crispy Caramel (23g bag)

4.5 syns 91 kcal

1 bag (23g)

The sweet-savoury caramel flavour is unusual enough to make these genuinely interesting, and the rice-puff base means you get good volume for the syn count. At 4.5 syns, they're in the same bracket as Quavers but offer a completely different eating experience — slower, more flavourful, slightly chewier.

  • Unique sweet-savoury caramel flavour feels more indulgent
  • Good volume — 23g bag has plenty of pieces
  • Satisfies both sweet and savoury cravings simultaneously
  • Widely available in major supermarkets
  • The caramel flavour isn't for everyone — polarising with some
  • 4.5 syns is higher than the Velvet Crunch or Pom-Bears options
6

Penn State Pretzels (25g)

4.5 syns 96 kcal

1 snack bag (25g)

Completely different texture to everything else on this list — hard, knotty, salty pretzels are a genuinely different snacking experience and one that many people find more filling than airy puffed snacks. At 4.5 syns for a 25g bag, the value is decent and the salty hit is real.

  • Dense texture makes them feel more substantial and filling
  • Strong salty flavour satisfies savoury cravings effectively
  • Different eating experience — a nice change from standard crisp textures
  • 25g bag offers good volume
  • Hard texture — not one for anyone with tooth sensitivity
  • Some people don't find pretzels as satisfying as proper crisps
7

Wotsits Crunchy (20g bag)

5 syns 105 kcal

1 bag (20g)

The highest syn count on this list, but Wotsits Crunchy earn their place because the cheesy flavour and satisfying snap are hard to replicate at a lower syn count. If cheese crisps are your thing, this is the best on-plan version you're going to find.

  • Strong, genuine cheese flavour that's hard to find at lower syn counts
  • Satisfying crunch — these don't dissolve, they snap
  • Widely available, including in single bags from newsagents
  • Good for those days when only cheese flavour will do
  • 5 syns is the highest on this list
  • 20g bag feels small compared to standard sharing crisp bags

How we ranked these

Items are ranked by overall satisfaction-per-syn value — a combination of syn count, portion volume, texture satisfaction, flavour payoff, and real-world availability in UK supermarkets. Lower syn counts are weighted, but pure syn count alone doesn't determine ranking — a 3.5-syn bag that disappears in three bites ranks below a 4.5-syn bag that genuinely satisfies a craving. Syn values are calculated at calories divided by 20, rounded to the nearest 0.5, based on standard packaged bag weights.

Frequently asked questions

What crisps can I have on Slimming World?

You can have any crisps on Slimming World — they just need to be synned. The best options are lighter, baked or popped crisps rather than standard fried ones, because they tend to be lower in calories per gram. Good choices include Popchips (4 syns), Quavers (4.5 syns), Velvet Crunch (3.5 syns), Snack a Jacks (4.5 syns), and Pom-Bears (3.5 syns). Standard Walkers crisps tend to land around 6–8 syns a bag, which is fine occasionally but not ideal as a daily snack.

Are Quavers low syn on Slimming World?

Quavers are 4.5 syns per standard 16g bag, which is considered low-syn by most Slimming World members. They're popular on the plan because despite the moderate syn count, the airy, puffed texture means you get a large number of individual pieces per bag, making them feel like a generous portion. They're one of the most recommended crisps at Slimming World groups for exactly this reason — you feel like you've had a proper snack for a reasonable syn spend.

How many syns are Wotsits?

Standard Wotsits Puffs (16.5g bag) are approximately 4.5 syns. Wotsits Crunchy (20g bag) are 5 syns. The puffed version is slightly lower in syn count per bag because they're less dense than the crunchy version. Both are synnable and work within a daily allowance, though the 5-syn crunchy version is better value if you want a more satisfying, longer-lasting snacking experience rather than something that melts immediately.

Are rice cakes free on Slimming World?

Plain, unflavoured rice cakes are generally syn-free or very close to it on Slimming World, but you should check the specific brand and flavour as flavoured versions often have added sugars or fats that push them into syn territory. Kallo plain rice cakes, for example, are essentially syn-free. Flavoured versions like Snack a Jacks are not free and are synned based on calories. As a general rule, if the rice cake has a coating or seasoning, it'll have syns — always check the calorie count.
