Costa Coffee on Slimming World — It’s Not Just About the Coffee

Costa is one of those places where you can easily wander in for a quick coffee and come out having spent 20 syns on a latte and a slice of cake without even thinking about it. The drinks menu alone is a minefield if you’re following Slimming World, and that’s before you even look at the food counter.

I’ve gone through Costa’s published nutrition data and worked out the approximate syn values for their most popular drinks, cakes, toasties and snacks. I’m using 1 syn = 20 calories as the conversion, which is the standard approach when something isn’t listed in the official Slimming World database.

The good news is that there are some genuinely low-syn options if you know what to order. The bad news is that most of the things you actually want are absolutely loaded with syns. Let’s get into it.

What to Order at Costa on Slimming World

There are some properly smart choices at Costa if you know what to look for:

  • Americano or black tea (0 syns) — The ultimate Slimming World Costa order. A splash of skimmed milk adds basically nothing (0.5 syns). This is genuinely Free territory.
  • Cappuccino with skimmed milk (3 syns) — The lightest milky coffee option. All that foam means less actual milk, so fewer syns than a latte.
  • Flat White with skimmed milk (4 syns) — A good shout if you want something stronger. Just always specify skimmed milk — semi-skimmed adds an extra syn.
  • Iced Latte with skimmed milk (4 syns) — Perfect in summer. The ice displaces some of the milk, so it’s actually lower than a regular hot latte.
  • Fruit Toast (9 syns) — If you need something to eat, this is one of the lowest-syn food options. Not exactly a feast, but it’ll take the edge off.
  • Bacon Roll (14 syns) — For a proper breakfast, the bacon roll is your best bet at Costa.

What to Avoid at Costa (High-Syn Traps)

This is where it gets painful:

  • Chicken & Bacon Panini (23 syns) — Sounds like a reasonable lunch but it’s nearly your entire daily syns in one sandwich.
  • Carrot Cake (22 syns) — Don’t be fooled by the "carrot" bit. That cream cheese frosting is doing all the damage here.
  • All Day Breakfast Toastie (22 syns) — Might as well have a proper fry-up at home for fewer syns and more control over what goes in it.
  • Chocolate Brownie (21 syns) — It’s gorgeous, I’m not going to lie. But 21 syns for a slice of brownie? That’s a hard sell.
  • Millionaire’s Shortbread (21 syns) — Caramel + chocolate + shortbread = syn disaster. You could have a whole meal for the same syns.
  • Hot Chocolate with semi-skimmed (13 syns) — That’s 13 syns just for a drink. Add whipped cream or marshmallows and you’re looking at 15–18.
  • Frostino (14 syns) — It’s basically a milkshake disguised as a coffee. Not a great use of syns.

Tips for Visiting Costa on Slimming World

Here’s how I handle Costa without coming out feeling guilty:

  1. Always specify skimmed milk. The difference between skimmed and semi-skimmed can be 1–3 syns per drink. Over a week of daily coffees, that really adds up.
  2. Skip the syrups. A shot of caramel or vanilla syrup adds roughly 3–4 syns. If you want flavour, ask for a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder instead — they’re virtually free.
  3. Don’t add cream. Whipped cream on any drink adds about 3–4 syns. Just say no.
  4. If you’re eating, keep it simple. The bacon roll (14 syns) or porridge (10.5 syns) are your best bets. Avoid the cake counter — everything there is 17+ syns.
  5. Bring your own snack. Have your Costa coffee (3–5 syns) and pair it with a piece of fruit from your bag. Cheapest and lowest-syn option going.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many syns is a Costa latte?

A medium Costa latte made with skimmed milk is approximately 5 syns (97 calories). With semi-skimmed milk it’s about 6.5 syns (135 calories). With oat milk it’s roughly 7.5 syns (148 calories). Always ask for skimmed to keep it as low as possible.

What is the lowest syn drink at Costa?

A black Americano (6 calories) or black tea (1 calorie) are essentially zero syns. If you want milk in your coffee, a cappuccino with skimmed milk is the lightest option at about 3 syns.

Can I have cake at Costa on Slimming World?

You can, but every slice of cake on the Costa menu is 17+ syns. If you really want something sweet, the fruit toast at 9 syns is the lowest-syn baked option. Otherwise, budget for it and enjoy it — just make sure your other meals that day are loaded with Free and Speed foods.
