Chinese Takeaway on Slimming World: It’s Not as Bad as You Think
Chinese is probably the takeaway I get asked about most. Everyone assumes it’s an absolute write-off on Slimming World, but actually, there are some surprisingly decent options if you choose carefully.
The tricky thing with Chinese takeaway is that there’s no standardised nutrition data. Unlike McDonald’s or Nando’s, your local Chinese doesn’t publish calorie counts. So I’ve used typical UK portion sizes from food composition databases and nutritional estimates to work out these approximate syn values.
These are estimates based on typical UK Chinese takeaway portions, using the 1 syn = 20 calories guide. They’re not official Slimming World values. Your local might use more oil, bigger portions, or different recipes — so treat these as a solid guide rather than exact science.

What to Order: Best Low-Syn Picks
These are the dishes I go for when I want Chinese but don’t want to blow my whole week’s syns:
- Chicken chop suey — About 16 syns. It’s basically chicken and vegetables in a light sauce. Not the most exciting, but it’s filling and the lowest-syn main dish I’ve found.
- King prawn chop suey — Around 14 syns. Prawns are lean, and the chop suey sauce is mostly stock-based. This is genuinely your best bet at the Chinese.
- Chicken in black bean sauce — About 22 syns. The sauce adds flavour without being too heavy on sugar or oil. Ask for extra veg to bulk it out.
- Boiled rice instead of egg fried rice — Saves you 6.5 syns straight away. I know egg fried rice is nicer, but 6.5 syns for extra oil and egg coating? Have the boiled and put your syns towards the main dish instead.
- Stir-fried mixed vegetables — Only 9 syns as a side. Order this alongside a chop suey and you’ve got loads of free-food vegetables with a manageable syn count.
What to Avoid: The Syn Explosions
I love all of these, which is what makes this list so painful:
- Crispy aromatic duck (quarter) — 45 syns with the pancakes and hoisin sauce. It’s the fat from the duck skin and the deep-frying that kills it. If you really want duck, limit yourself to 2-3 pancakes (12-18 syns) and share the rest.
- Sweet and sour pork (battered) — 37 syns. The batter and sweet sauce are a double whammy. Ask for sweet and sour without batter (24 syns) if they’ll do it.
- Crispy chilli beef — 36 syns. It’s deep-fried beef strips coated in sugar and chilli. Absolutely delicious, absolutely lethal syn-wise.
- Special fried rice — 34 syns just for the rice. Before you’ve even added a main dish. Have boiled rice (19.5 syns) and save yourself almost 15 syns.
- Prawn crackers — 20 syns for the bag. And nobody eats just a few. They’re basically deep-fried starch and they go down like air. Say no at the door.
Tips for Ordering Chinese Takeaway on Plan
- Chop suey is your friend. Whether it’s chicken, prawn, or beef — chop suey dishes are stir-fried with lots of veg in a light sauce. They’re consistently the lowest-syn option across the whole menu.
- Always choose boiled rice. Egg fried rice adds 6-7 syns for what is essentially the same amount of food with added oil. Not worth it when you’re already spending syns on the main dish.
- Avoid anything "crispy" or "battered." Crispy duck, crispy chilli beef, sweet and sour battered chicken, prawn toast — "crispy" means deep-fried, and deep-fried means double the syns.
- Skip the starters. Spring rolls (18 syns), prawn toast (22 syns), spare ribs (28 syns) — you can easily add 20-30 syns before the main event. If you must have something, two duck pancakes (12 syns) are the least damaging option.
- Order extra veg. A portion of stir-fried mixed vegetables or beansprouts alongside your main makes the meal feel bigger and fills you up with speed foods.
- Refuse the prawn crackers. They come free with most orders, which makes them feel harmless. They’re not. 20 syns and zero nutritional value. Ask them not to include them — if they’re not in the house, you can’t eat them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the lowest syn Chinese takeaway dish?
King prawn chop suey at roughly 14 syns is the lowest-syn main dish you’ll find at most Chinese takeaways. Chicken chop suey is close behind at about 16 syns. Both are stir-fried with lots of vegetables in a light sauce, which keeps the calories down compared to battered or heavily-sauced dishes.
How many syns in egg fried rice?
A typical takeaway portion of egg fried rice is approximately 26 syns (around 520 calories). Plain boiled rice from the Chinese is about 19.5 syns. That’s a saving of 6.5 syns just by choosing boiled over fried — one of the easiest swaps you can make.
Are prawn crackers high in syns?
Yes — a standard bag of prawn crackers from the Chinese is around 20 syns. They’re deep-fried tapioca starch and very calorie-dense despite feeling light. They often come free with your order, but that doesn’t mean they’re free in syns. Best to refuse them or limit yourself to a small handful (about 5 syns for 4-5 crackers).
